Hybrids vs Irons?

Hi,

 

Been doing some experimenting recently and I seem to be able to hit a 4 and 5 iron better than the hybrids.

 

I thought the hybrids were supposed to be easier to hit? Has anyone found they like irons better than hybrids?

Put me down.

 

I get more consistent results with my long irons than I do with any hybrid I've tried to date.

 

I'm able to hit more shots with a variety of shapes and flights with my 1 and 2 iron than I can with a hybrid and feel more comfortable with them in my hands.

 

I grew up playing long irons, and naturally get a medium-high flight so I perhaps find it easier to stick with what I grew up playing than some players who started the game more recently and/or hit the ball a little lower.

 

 

Use whatever works best for you.

I am in step with the long iron contingent. Below is just one reason why.

The course is ready for the big boys with very narrow fairways and rough worthy of the name; significantly higher and, worse still, thicker than it was for the tournament last year. If you hit into it, finding the ball is a matter of luck even if you keep your eye on where it lands and walk straight there from the tee. On ocaisions we had four players and four caddies searching in vain.

 

Some of the guys tried hitting hybrids (relatively small headed ones) and it was a joke. From the fairway they are fine but with the ball sitting down in anything other than wispy rough, forget it. The only thing that was getting contact with the ball was a blade sized/shaped head. G.I. shovels need not apply.

 

I own a Baffler 16* but prefer the confidence and control of the 2i so it hardly ever makes the bag.

 

By the way, the three guys playing with me had marshaled all 4 days for Tiger at the event last year. As we walked round the course they were pointing out where he hit what shot in what conditions. These guys are not B.S. merchants and they were absolutely unanimous in their belief that Woods hits shots that no one else can pull off or even dare to try.

Having stood exactly to the yard where Woods stood and seen what he did I now fully share the opinion of respected observers like Feherty, McCord and players like Ernie Els, et al, when they say Tiger is a freak and in a class all his own.

No Tiger this year. But we do have Mickelson, Els, Singh, Garcia, Harrington, Goosen, Cabrera and others. Wednesday to Sunday I will be inside the ropes with whoever the organisers deem to be the top crowd draw so will report back to WRX on what happens.
