Cleveland Classic Models

I have just seen a past discussion of the "models" produced by Cleveland Classics.

In addition to the models mentioned in the discussion, I have an AL44 persimmon driver. I also have a sIecial 3-wood that has a longer shaft. It's a "BIG AL".

I got the bug for those old Cleveland's back in the mid 80's when I saw Greg Norman bombing one. One of the greatest drivers of the golf ball of all time. You should post pics of yours over in that Cleveland discussion. Everybody in these classic threads goes "ga-ga" over pictures.

Greg Norman was hitting a Dave Wood restored/rebuild MacGregor M43 driver, not a Cleveland Classic. Davis Love III played a Cleveland Classic driver during the 80s.

Well the only time I ever got close enough to see him hitting balls in person was on the driving range at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis for a Childrens Hospital Pro-Am back in 1985 or 1986 and he was most definitely hitting a Cleveland Classic. I was standing next to his bag, about 6 feet away while talking to Denis Watson. We both were mesmerized watching how well he drove the ball.

Could it possibly be Norman testing a driver before putting it in play? I have asked Dave Wood this question. He was working on the PGA Tour at this during this time on many of the top players woods, including Greg Norman. That being said, Cleveland Classics woods were terrific woods. I have owned several, including one I gamed before I ventured into the classic MacGregor persimmon woods from the 50s (Toney Penna TP Special, M85W, 945W).
