Hard stepping longer shaft pulls

Hey guys. I tried searching for an answer to this but came up empty.

 

I was wondering, if you were going to reshaft some irons with pulls that were .5" longer than what you usually play and hard stepped them once, would that essentially equal out to standard length, straight in clubs? Or am I missing something that happens in the trimming process that would effect how they would play. They're taper tipped so should have only been butt trimmed.

I think it would be standard length, you would lose .5"

length is back at std, shafts a tad stronger (3-4 CPM) , and shaft weight goes up equal to 0.5 inch compared to std strait in (1.4 - 1.7 grams depending on shaft weight)

So hardstepping DG 120s (118g) in 4 and 5 iron heads would make them swing weight like they were about 119.5?

Thanks for the insight, Howard. Do you think those differences would be noticable and worth worrying about? It's for x100's if that matters.

NO, dont forget that a shaft like Dynamic Gold has a TOLERANCE of plus minus 1.5 grams, so within the set, some would be against the lighter side, others to the heavy, so they can be up to 3 grams in difference from the lightest to the one with highest weight. Flex, again both tolerances and FLO can move flex almost the the same as we talk here, we expect 1 to 3 CPM as a normal variable, so the most sensitive will notice, many others will not.@Poolparty all else equal it takes about 9 grams shaft wgt to move SW by 1 point, so if SW is your concerns....this is less than 1* lie angle change will move them and thats 0.25 SWP for 1* lie, here we talk 0.17-0.18 SWP and thats way within any tolerance you can find and converted to head weight its in the area of 0.36 grams up.

I was just wondering if my math is right. In a 118g 5-iron shaft, each inch weighs 3g. So a hard stepped 5 iron shaft would feel like a 119.5g shaft.

Your 9 and Pw would have a full 1/2" length difference compared to the common 1/4" difference in length.

Yes you got it right, but keep in mind this is what i call "comparable weight" to get uncut weight numbers we can compare directly, so the weight gain to cut weight is 0.5" less butt cut than normal, and the other way, soft stepping we have a 0.5" left over to cut away and loose weight equal to that. This way it become 3 grams from SS1 to HS1 on those shafts

He would have to ADD a PW shaft, that shaft is now used for the #9 iron (who needs 0.25" butt cut to get to standard PL)
