Torque in graphite shafts?

Can someone please explain the true meaning of torque in graphite shafts. How can a Grafalloy ProLaunch with a 2.8 torque hit the ball higher than a Aldila NV with a 3.5 torque?

Torque has to due with the shafts ability to resist twisting not the flexpoint or tip stiffness. A shaft with a softer tip section will give you more height than a tip stiff shaft will.

 

The lower the torque the better dispersion the shaft will have but will also feel boardier than a shaft with a higher torque rating.

Good explanation. Torque and kick-point are completely different things and so you can get high launch shafts with low torque, such as UST V2 65, Graffaloy ProLauch etc.

Torque refers to the tendency for the club to twist on its long axis (like wringing out a towel). Flex refers to the tendency of the shaft to bend without twisting. A high kickpoint shaft will hit the ball lower and feel stiffer. A low kickpoint shaft will hit the ball higher and feel softer. Usually, low torque shafts are also high kickpoint shafts, but it is possible to have a low kickpoint, low torque shaft (Purple Ice, IROD driver shaft). Right off hand, I can't think of a high kickpoint, high torque shaft, though. Usually high kickpoint shafts are designed for controlling the faster than average swing of a more skilled golfer who would also want lower torque as well.
