Building My Own Hickory Set... but I am a lefty and am 6'8"

I just wanted to float this out on the forum as a stepping off point before I begin to do my own research and try to source clubs. I REALLY want to try and track down my own set of hickories so I can have a set to just tool around with. However, I am 6'8" and would really like to build a set from "scratch" (kind of) so I can play them at lengths that won't mess up my back and will actually allow to receive the same enjoyment I get from playing my modern set of clubs. Any help, resources, guides, or anecdotes from experience would be greatly appreciated and I look forward to hearing what you guys have to say

 

Base Questions

1. How many clubs should be in set? Also, what should loft gaps between clubs be

2. Is it possible to build your own set/get wood shaft blanks that I could cut and install myself?

3. Best brands to look out for in terms of the different types of clubs I would need to get (Driver, Irons, Wedges, Putter)

4. Can you put modern grips on hickory clubs? I don't care if this isn't traditional I just really need to have something that's corded and will fit in my hands

5. Best places to get a really small/vintage/beat to sh*t canvas sunday bag that I can store the clubs in

 

*Note: should I just save up and get a pre-built set of irons from Louisville Golf or is it more worthwhile to buy shaft blanks from them and source my heads from elsewhere

There is an alternative that you did not mention. It is possible to add an extension of up to 2 inches, but you need someone experienced to do it.

 

Here is my brief answer on your five questions.

 

1) You can start with as few as 6 clubs (Brassie, Mid Iron, Mashie, Mashie Niblick, Niblick and Putter). I personally prefer six or 7 irons with roughly 5 degree increments. I carry 2 or 3 woods.

 

2) It is possible but there is a big learning curve. Much easier to buy the shafts but it is expensive and you need to know what you are doing.

 

3) Don’t worry about matching, choose individual clubs that feel right. Some of my favourites include Stewart, George Nicholl, Maxwell and some MacGregors. My favourite putter is a Schenectady, there are lots of good choices.

 

4) I would never put a modern grip on a hickory club. I use grips with the suede side out and never use a glove and I play over 100 rounds per year.

 

5) I would look for a replica bag but start with a modern small bag that suits you.

 

Replicas from Louisville and Tad Moore are an option and I highly recommend getting replica woods if you intend to play a lot and a replica sand Niblick. I personally prefer my main set of irons to be original. I have a replica set of irons which I bought used and employ them when weather conditions are les than ideal. Plus, having frequency matched hickory shafts an 4 degree gaps is more like modern golf to me, call me crazy.
