Recommended Posts

i just got fitted for new irons....and i found a surprising problem....my launch angle on a 6 iron was 8* when the guy said it should be like 20+*....heres what else he told me if it helps...

ball speed is 80+, med/slow tempo, i also have problems keeping weight behind ball i have 85-100 mph

any ideas whats causing the problem?

i am currently getting lessons from a great instructor he has won before on the sunshine tour (wayyy long time ago) and has worked with a few great teachers of the game....we are working on getting my hands ahead of the ball( i might be overcooking it too much) but im sure that im probably not thinning it

If you're having problems getting your hands in front of the ball, it's really likely that you're hitting up on the ball. You might not be "thinning it" in the traditional sense, but you're not getting that compression.

I had the same problem recently...went to Golf Galaxy and got launch angles of between 5 and 7 degrees even with a 10.5 FT-5. I picked up a copy of Bobby Clampett's "The Impact Zone" and I haven't hit the ball better in years...it basically focuses entirely on getting your hands in front of the ball and I really feel like I can go after the ball now. Went out and am now looking for a lower lofted driver with a lower spinning shaft.

You're right about the angle of decent.

Clampett's book is written to build up from putting, to chipping, to pitching, to full swing. One drill that he uses is to look at a point about 4 inches ahead of the ball and try to get your hands to that point before the club hits the ball. His concept is that all professionals swings bottom out 4 inches in front of the golf ball. If you've got the recent issue of Golf Digest with Ernie on the cover, the Breaking 100-90-80 section is all about this principle.

I too live in the cold and just worked on chipping a ball (or even without a ball) with that thought in mind across my living room. I moved up to pitching without a ball, but my main thought it to hit down through the ball and keep my head behind the ball.

I got so focused on swing path and mechanics that I forgot that golf is still all about making good fundamental contact with the ball. I'd highly recommend the book and it has some great drills that work on all levels of your game. Hope this helps.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
