Better Up & Down %

Recommended Posts

In the never ending search of lowering scores, and looking in isolation at that aspect (before the 'just hit the GIR' crowd) since everyone will have to save some holes from time to time, I wanted to dig deeper into the Tour guys U&D numbers. The only stat related to this on their site is scrambling % and although it's not a direct relation to U&D, we can draw a few conclusions. All in all, the scrambling average in 2021-2022 for Tour guys was 58%, let's round this out and say they save it 2/3 of the time.

Now, you'd expect from those numbers for their proximity to be real close, 'tap ins' because we all know it's a 50/50 make rate from 8 feet. But still :

  • proximity to the hole from 10-20 yards, all shots : 7'0"
  • proximity to the hole from 20-30 yards, all shots : 9'4"
  • proximity to the hole from 30+ yards, all shots : 12'8"

Obvisouly, not bad but surely not tap ins most of the time. So, what gives? If, rough math, on average their 20 yards shot end up at 8 feet, they'd save it 50%.

Is there something to say about where they leave it and just not how close they leave it, compared to mortal good sitcks?
Or is it just a math trick, where their average might be 7feet from 10-20 yards but 2/3 of those shots end up at 3feet while the remainning 1/3 are chunks that end up at 15feet?
Or else?

I'm no stats person - but I'd say your collection of data misses out on a lot of shots that would be considered in a scrambling or Up & Down stat - namely all those shots under 10 yards.

But, it's also very likely that I'm just a moron. Who knows?

For sure! About the under 10 yards shots, that proximity bucket is 3'8", but guys have more or less one of those per round (converting 86% of those), while the other buckets would account for 6-7 shots. Maybe that's enough to bring that average up, might have to dig even deeper! Pretty sure you're not a moron haha

Here we go @jholz - Tour guys had in 2021-2022, on average per round :

  • 0.94 shots from 10-yards, proximity to the hole : 3'8" - 86% save
  • 2.21 shots from 10-20 yards, proximity to the hole : 7'0" - 64% save
  • 1.16 shots from 20-30 yards, proximity to the hole : 9'4" - 52% save
  • 0.67 shots from 30+ yards, proximity to the hole : 12'8" - 29% save

Weighted average : 3.02 saves out of 4.98 attempts... 3/5 saves - makes sense.

Nice. This makes sense. Thanks for the vote of confidence concerning my intellect. 😁

I've always have 2/3rds, aka roughly 66%, as my goal in practice. Always hope to live up to that on course...mileage on that one varies.

Intriguing, however, are the shot frequency stats. I'm surprised by the low number of attempts under 10 yards.

Now I'm questioning my spacial awareness abilities. I have to admit that I don't think in yards within a certain proximity of the green. I have no idea how long any of those shots might really be, yardagewise, whether it's me hitting them or anyone else.

  • Thanks 1

We know your wife made you write that. After she goes to sleep, you can come back here and we can have a support group.

Damn man, it was WRX.

My wife is cool. She lets me play golf regularly.

Now, this place in general, and the Instruction Forum specifically, you learn to be self deprecating. You guys are frickin' ruthless... 😉

I had the same assumption, but makes sense, under 30 feet and not on the green, I can see a couple shots from there, but most would fall into the 10-20 yards bucket.

Helps to manage expectations from that spot also : a 15 yards chip in the rough that gets to 7’ is in line with Tour guys

Can I claim rookie mistake if I haven't been to this forum very much in the a long time?  Totally forgot where I was posting.

One thing I've learned, just because she lets you play golf regularly does not mean she doesn't think you're an idiot.  And my wife is cool as well.
