Putter toe hang question

Posting this here as well as in the club tech forum, so feel free to delete if needed. Simple question, but I can’t find the answer anywhere.

When measuring toe hang on a putter, if the shaft is resting on a table, or simply resting on two points (I usually just sit it on top of my two index fingers), where is the proper place for the point closest to the putter head in order to get the actual measurement used for what manufacturers report as toe hang?

For example, on my Odyssey #7, if I put right index finger near the grip, and my left index finger just above the shaft bend, it is a face-balanced putter as described. If I move my left index finger to just above where the shaft goes into the head, it’s now got a moderate toe hang. Same for my old Dual Force Rossie 2.

With the new ER2 I just got, it’s reported as having 22° of toe hang, but it behaves the same as the two face balanced putters above - face is parallel to the ground when both resting points are above the shaft bend, but has toe hang if the one point is below the bend.

Plumbers neck’s are similar, but go from moderate toe hang to max hang when you change hand position.

So, does anyone know where the proper spot is tomeasure? Are the #7, Rossie 2, and ER2 the exact same, but just measured with a different method?

You don’t use two points. Just find the single balance point of the club and set it there.

Just went and checked my ER2, which Evnroll advertises as 22° toe hang. With a single balance point (which is essentially the same as two points above the shaft bend), it is very much face-balanced. The only way to get the toe to hang is to have the balance point below the bend. So, it seems like some companies do measure it differently

That’s not how it works. It’s measured from the single balance point without anything outside force applied. It may be advertised as 22* but that doesn’t mean it’s exactly 22* nor can you accurately eye test. Sometimes 10* still appears faced balanced. Lie angle can also affect the toe hang a little bit. Flatter has less, upright base more since balance point is determined by where the shaft(if continued a line straight down through the head) is in relation to the heads center of gravity. The closer it is to center the less toe there will be.

I guess I’m still confused, then. What is the single balance point? I assumed that meant the point on the shaft where it was balanced between the head and grip. It’s definitely got no toe hang at all if that’s the case. If anything, the toe is slightly up in the first pic. See pics.

Yes that’s how you do it. And no, it doesn’t have anywhere close to 22*.

Most of the time you can tell by just looking at the shaft, run your finger down the shaft as if it was going to extend into the putter from there, single bend is close to middle which means its essentially face balanced. If you look at a single bend and center shaft putter, if the shaft were to be extended on the single bend, it would look the same as a center shafted putter.

Do you have the gravity grip? If so the weight along the spine of the grip causes it to be face balanced. With a normal grip the toe hang would be 22*.
