What does everyone think of this course? Is 6 dull 6 great 6 dull holes true?

 

I’ve done most of my research on courses through GCA and I’m just now realizing how un-mainstream a lot of their opinions are

I played the course once. From what I remember the first couple of holes are the 'scoring holes' and back nine is a beast. The holes in the middle I would not categorize as dull but not great either.

Royal Troon is far from dull and as has been said any sort of wind can make the back 9 almost impossible.

 

Troon eases you in then wham it hits you. Its the most underrated of all the Open rota courses that I have played, Personally I found the back 9 tougher than Carnoustie plus it has great views unlike Carnoustie. I'm not saying Troon is better but I am saying I enjoyed it more, much more. Plus if you have time take in Portland too, its a brilliant "second" 18.

It is interesting that you don't hear about Troon's views much even though it looks to have better views than any Rota course other than Turnberry.

While I concur that some of Troon's holes aren't as dramatic as others, I wouldn't characterize them as dull. The opening holes sort of bring you into the flow of the course gently, without suddenly slapping you in the face. The middle holes are so good that they may make the closing holes seem duller, but it isn't really because those holes are dull, its just the comparison to the great holes. But while the early holes (that some call dull) are easier, those closing "dull" holes are mostly pretty tough, especially when the wind is up a bit. Overall I thought it a very fair test that keeps you focused on having to execute shots and doesn't really give you anything you didn't deserve.

The important aspect about these type of discussions to remember is context. In the context of very good to great courses, Troon doesn't stand out as special. That said, anybody interested in golf history and the Open should give Troon a go...assuming the green fee is affordable.

Royal Troon is like an advanced Economics class, you can learn a lot but you don't necessarily enjoy it.
