Counterbalance making a comeback?

Viktor Hovland, Rickie fowler, Wyndham Clark come to mind as players using longer counterbalanced putters. Anybody out there use CB? Why or why not? And do you think this is a trend that will continue?

There’s just a lot more options for counterbalancing these days. More CB style grips, shafts, heavier head-weights, etc. However it’s certainly not for everyone. Stroke-lab is an even more popular use of counterbalancing than the style u mentioned. Some people love it, some people hate it.

But it’s easy for OEM’s to market their counterbalanced putters because it allows for a heavier head, which directly leads to a higher MOI. But in reality, MOI doesn’t mean crap if you’re sacrificing feel or distance control

I recreated Hovi’s putter with a Toulon Atlanta.

It is real well balanced. Easy to hit my line. But my speed is consistently incorrect. The Winn counterbalanced grip did what it was supposed to do, my ball would end up beyond the hole.

For a 1-2 times a week golfer, I couldn’t find the feel. I played one of my best rounds ever tee to green, and just lost it on the greens.

Out of curiosity, is there general rule/guide in determining what your counterbalance specs (in terms of putter length and lie angle) should be versus your standard specs? I’ve read usually 3” longer than what your standard putter length would be, but is the lie angle still usually the same?

I’ve messed around with an old 35” putter I have lying around (i play 33”) and, while gripping down a few inches, it felt like I had to stand somewhat far away from the ball or else i’d be worried about the grip getting caught on my shirt/belt-line during the stroke 😂

yes ... in addition to wrist-to-floor measurement ... have to consider distance/length of belly-to-putter-butt measurement! same problem here!

I have been playing counter balanced putters for years. I find them much more stable and consistent.

As I got older, regular length putters became harder to keep on line and results became more sporadic. Some days I was lights out (24 Putts Per Round) and other days I was awful (44 PPR).

Once I made the move to counter balanced putters I found more consistency from round to round (28 PPR to 32 PPR). It may not be for everyone, but I think it has its place.
