Painting my Taylormade Spider putter

I have a Taylormade Spider which is great but I want a fresher look to it. I'm looking to spray it matt black but wondering if I can go straight over the existing copper-coloured paint or if I need to remove it or just scuff it up as it is?

 

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Good prep is always important.  I don't know if you have to remove the head, you can tape off the shaft.  But I would certainly scuff with a light scotch bright pad, prime with a good primer and top coat as desired.

 

Are you planning to use rattle can paint or do you have some sort of sprayer?

I want to keep the centre of it white so I think I'm going to tape off the white area, scuff/sand the copper coloured parts & spray. 

 

I'm going to use a rattle can paint that's suggested on a few sites that I've looked at.

 

Just didn't want to go into a lot of fiddly paint removal if I didn't have to.

Not bad for a first attempt. Not absolutely perfect but I'm happy with the results.

can't stress this enough - after refurbing countless putters including re-paints, take it to bare metal to whatever finish you prefer (ie sand blasted vs completely smooth) - even if you do just one light coat of etching primer -- it will be MUCH durable than just standard paint. further, regardless of what paint you use... please allow for at least 24 hrs of curing time before using it to allow the paint to properly harden (yes, this even matters for the 'fast dry' paint - which, i personally would not recommend but to each their own).

i recently ordered a new spider with the black face and would prefer it with the white.
