Need help answering some questions mainly affects of loft lie bounce and spin, strengthen 7 or weaken 6?

Recommended Posts

So I currently have 3-aw rogue st pro with project x ls, and after a year I noticed my 8 iron and 4 iron to be useless gapping wise on my garmin tracking system (yardages). so I'm looking at new clubs just to see if there's a better option then taking out my 8 or 4 iron. One option was I fell in love with the feel with the apex pro, but with the stock shaft I was spinning it like a wedge on my mishits and was wondering the effects of strengthening a 7iron versus weakening the 6iron. I have a steep swing and the fitter mentioned that it could be a problem but nothing else really had the feel close to what I'm currently using so maybe taking out the 8 or 4 iron is the best option?

Thanks

the differences in lofts would be

weakening 2*:

4- 24

5- 27

6-31

7-35

8-39

9-43

pw47

Strengthening 2*

5-23

6-27

7-31

8-35

9-39

pw-43

aw-48

mainly trying to figure out if I can get my spin numbers down to my current clubs doing this or if I'm chasing a rabbit and just bite the bullet and stick with what I got right now?

I'm very confused by your post... you mention the 4 and 8 are useless and you might take them out of the bag.  But you're also considering strengthening the 7 or weakening the 6, which would make those two almost the same club and it wouldn't do anything about your issue with the 8 and 4 irons.  And then you're thinking about getting another set of irons and changing those lofts.  I think you've got too many things going on in your post for anyone to give you a good answer...

If the main issue is that your gapping is off it would be useful to share your yardages and to get the actual lofts of your irons checked to make sure they are what they are supposed to be.  Your 8i not gapping well could be an issue with the 7i, 8i, or 9i.  As for your 4i, if that is giving you basically the same yardage as your 5i, then either the loft is off on one of those two, or you might be at a point with the 4i that you don't generate enough ball speed to get decent carry yardage, so you might consider going to a hybrid in that spot.

Titleist TSR4, 7.25*, Aldila Rogue Black 95 MSI 70 S
Titleist TS3, 14.25*, Speeder VC 8.2 Tour Spec X

my fault mentioning of strengthening the 7 or weakening the 6 was in getting new irons.

the 4 and 8 are covered by other clubs in my current set and is why I am looking for new ones.

Considering you’re steep with respect to strengthening/weakening.  Weakening the 6 will slightly increase the bounce and possibly help you with turf interaction and contact whereas strengthening the 7 will slightly decrease the bounce and facilitate digging (pretty cool if you’re into 2’ long beaver tails?)

I don’t think I would bend new clubs just to get spin numbers down.  I would order the pros with a less spinny shaft.  Callaway has a lot of good options for no upcharge.  Think you’ll be happier having the right shaft rather than adjusting lofts.

also for your current set probably need to know your distances from top down or bottom up to decide the best path, but its possible your lofts and lies are shifted, especially if you’re steep and hit off mats.  I took irons into a guy once and told him I needed 5 more yards on my 6 iron and my miss was left, he adjusted lie and loft accordingly and it worked perfect.   Well as perfect as it could for a hack like me, but I could tell the difference
