Another downswing initiation question!?!?

Please help with my confused state!

Dear all

Apologies on another similar thread re downswing initiation, I am having a real problem with my mental thoughts and what I should be doing on the downswing which I would appreciate any kind person's input on this -

I am taking lessons at the moment and on the video my teacher, quite rightly, highlighted that on the downswing my right knee immediately started sliding with the left on the start of the downswing, thus no seperation between them. My teacher explained (which I understood) that this is a key point, where the left kneee should move first, with the right knee staying still for a split second.

I was happy with that, however, he has told me to create this seperation by initiating the downswing by squatting into my right hip with the weight moving to the left and my right hip 'cutting in'

I can do this move and am happy to work like hell on grooving it, the problem being is when I do it, there is still a lateral movement in my right knee and there is never a massive gap between both knees at any time, even if I do it in slow motion.

On the otherhand if all I think of is my hips turning to start the dowswing, rather than squatting into the right hip, I manage to get the slight lateral movement with a much bigger knee seperation. Clearly though that is me just experimenting and not under the orders of a qualified or experienced teacher.

I guess my question is two fold:

1. Is this knee seperation of paramount importance and
2. What should really initiate the downswing - is it a turn, squat, lateral movement to the left and with what?

I do have another lesson in a weeks time but am dying to talk it through with a few people who know what they are talking about beforehand and also to help me practise up until the next lesson.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

This move with the left knee seperating and creating the gap is the perfect ideal move to get you over to your left pivot point......with your right foot and knee moviong when you get your seteration this ounds to me like you are too far behind the ball at the top of the swing and may have moved laterally in the backswing from here it means you need a lateral move to get to your left pivot point.

 

To create this squat move that your coach wants will leave you sat on your right pivot point and will mean that if you rotate through the shot you will hit weak wipes to the right and not be able to gain true consistency.......IMOP it is from a good backswing pivot it which could be as simple as a small setup change ...... this allows the left knee to move and seperate from the right as the weight moves across and allows you to rotate hard left and strike the ball solidly ;)

Thanks Dan, I have some footage which I am trying to post on but having real technical difficulties, hopefully if I get it on, it may shed more light but I do understand re the left and right pivot points.
