7 wood vs Callaway UW

Hey guys!

 

Curious if anyone has tested these two against one another with similar shafts/loft (21) setup? I play my 7 wood .5" short but had a chance to try my friends UW and it was fantastic. Seemed to fit right between a hybrid (which I've never cared for) and a 7 wood. Loved the look of the UW as it seemed more fairway wood like than hybrid. Curious which one you decided to keep in the bag and why? Cheers

Better spin retention with a true mid penetrating flight. It is as neutral as can be with no bias. You get exactly what you put into the club and will never get those high spinners.

UW launch lower, spin less, slightly more accurate because of shorter shaft.

Only had the chance to hit the stock model UW and it sit upright to me at my stance (I am a small guy) and it felt not nearly as good as a 7 wood at impact. But I could not test it with the same shafts, so the comparison is not really a good one.

Maybe it’s just how it appeared to you, but 57* lie-angle at 41” length for the Apex UW length is pretty flat. I would point to the shaft regarding your experience with the feel at impact, I never tried it with the stock shaft but it’s my favorite club in terms of feel with my Ventus Blue. I suppose it’s all personal preference though (i too am a small guy fwiw)

I played 4wd/7wd until recently - granted my new UW is a 19*, but I would expect the UW to have more horsepower than 7W.  I have the OG UW, and it spins less than my former Titleist TSi2 21* (and even 16.5* for that matter).

 

UW is a good club - you get the versatility of the sole design, but more punch than 7W.

Haven't hit a traditional 7w but 2nd the UW decision. It flights well. Just get the right shaft for it to fit your swing and it can be very versatile. Today I choked down on it and actually flew the green on an uphill par 4 from 200 out to the back. Then later I used it just to get as close as i could on a par 5 and flew it 220.

For sure it is on me and not the club… it was a demo day at our local club, a lot of clubs have been there and the UW was just one of them. The Cally sales representative over there was not very interested in supporting me so I had to help myself. Maybe the day would have been different with another person and a little more time

On paper UW seemed the way to go for me, but the look at address threw me off. Did something to me that made

my swing funky.

I stuck with my 7 wood. I just hit the UW too low for what I wanted it do. UW is definitely better into the wind, but I can flight the 7 well enough for my needs. Both are good options. Just depends on what window you are looking to hit.

The UW has been my club of choice over a 7W (TSR and Stealth tested as I'm a lefty with few options) or hybrid for a few reasons.  Speed is a main factor in my choice as spin stays more consistent and doesn't kick up, which is great for approaches and long par 3s.  It can be very windy here, so you need to be able to flight it down.  I prefer shaping shots both ways on shorter dogleg par 4s with fairways that are firm and chase out, so the UW gives me more control as I tend to struggle with the 7W.  I've had utility irons and they're too hot to handle as well.  Finally, my gapping is working for me without having to sacrifice versatility with my 3W (265) to UW (240) to 4i (225)

My wife loves her 7W and uses it more as her 4i-5i replacement since she's not hitting it as far (~175 yds carry)  So I guess it's more of what you need in your game honestly

7w all the way.  Been playing 7 wood for over 5 nows and just love it.  the new Srixon ZXII FWs are the sleeper of 2023!!

Spent 3 months testing both. Ping g430 max 7w lofted to 19.5* @ 41.5” and 21* UW @ 41”. Both had Ventus tr blue 8x. Love the look of the UW and they had similar similar launch condition inside on TM. Both had apex around 110-120’ and spin in the low 4000’s -UW may be a touch lower. Ball speed was higher with the 7 by 3 mph. Ultimately it came down to course performance and the 7w was much more versatile from the fairway/rough and recently sold the UW.
