Should I learn it now or later?

Though I've played off and on many times since in high school, I've only seriously sought to practice, play and improve over the last couple of years. If it matters, I'm 35, and distance is not a problem.

I have a lot of confidence in my woods and have practiced with them quite a bit even at the domes during the winter. Like most semi-beginners I have the goal of hitting it straight. But I found that I can set up and hit a good looking fade without a lot of difficulty.

Is this something I should continue to practice and try to apply at the course? Or am I putting the cart before the horse?

There are many people on this site who know more about the golf swing than I do, but if you have a good, fundamentally sound, repeatable swing and that swing produces a fade, I say go with it. There is nothing wrong with hitting a fade.

As I developed into a better golfer I learned how to fade and draw the ball, it can really help your game out if you can learn them and become consistent with them.

 

I still play a straight shot (unless I need to shape a shot) with my longer clubs but I really like to hit draws into tight pins, so if you're hitting a nice fade, practice and perfect it

I can hit both, but my natural shot is a slight fade, and I find it more consistent than the draw - for me at least. I use a draw only when I know I need to fight the wind or a side sloping fairway, and this is helpful for maybe 2 or 3 shots per game. But, if I had to say where my practice would go it would be chipping and pitching first, before practicing working the ball.

Hit your natural shot and improve on it.

 

I don't know how your scoring but that should really be your only concern. Is shaping your shots keeping you from making more birdies? Or is it something else?

 

A few suggestions:

-Work on your short game

-Work on your distance control (especially with your short irons and wedges)

-Work on your putting :)

The shot shaping ability will come to you almost automatically.

 

For now, just keep swinging and try to stay with hitting neutral/straight.

--> As you will realize hitting neutral/straight is the most difficult thing to do.

Many thanks for the responses and input. As far as the suggestion from Bomb and Gouge to work on my short game, well that is something I do WAY more of. But thanx for the reminder, there is always room for improvement :)
