defying convention...?
I've noticed i put alot better when i keep my feet very close together, and my right foot pulled back a bit... it keeps my right elbow against my body, and i seem to make much better contact when i putt like this...

i've been experimenting with different grips / stances, cause my conventional way of putting, i make contact all over the face, (high, low, toe, heel), it's never consistent... :cheesy:

I have a very narrow, fairly open stance (right handed, right eye dominant), not too weird but not orthodox either i guess!

Yeah, mine's pretty fugly. I basically put 90% of my weight on my back foot with my head behind the ball and a wide open (maybe 45 degrees) stance, choking way down on the shaft (almost as if it were about 30-inches, but I use a 35" putter for the desired weight). I swing straight back and straight through, which because I'm so open is almost on a diagonal with an open face. For some reason though, once I switched to this I almost never three putt, and I one putt a whole lot more - so I'm sticking with it. To judge speed, I visualize lawn bowling and actually make a bowling throw. Then I putt with that speed, it just sort of matches up that way. My friends smirk, but that's fine. they never drop 20-foot birdie putts.

Putting is my score killer... I've tried everything. Even sidesaddle all of last summer. I actually think I putted my best (especially from within 10 feet) sidesaddle, but I just couldn't take the harrasment, ridicule, badgering... I felt like a lepper; and unfortunately I shoot mid 80's so it's not like I could laugh back...

I really sucked at putting so much that was embarrasing, until one day at the putting green with my friends I was trying to have silly fun imitating Phil's odd putting stance. My friends were shocked how I started knocking them in consistently for the first time in my life. Now I have that kinda weird stance and putting is not my weakest part of my game, the only problem is that my back hurts after taking putting practice.

I bend over the ball like Nicklaus and Palmer..... :russian_roulette:

It's the only way for me thusfar. And I love olde skoole. :(

"Get closer to your work."

Doesn't Phil Mickelson do that too? It seems like he uses a childs putter and his hands are almost down to his knees.

I am not that great but for short putts - I widen my feet stance. Wider than my shoulders. It seems to help.

I've tried lots of different stances as well, and I still switch around when things aren't going the way I want them to. I find that when I'm having trouble within 5 or 6', I just open up and widen up so my feet are spread really wide. with the ball a bit back of middle, I can really see the whole line right into the hole, and I can stroke the putter straight at the hole. when my distance control is off, I take an open chipping stance with my feet really close. again, it lets me see the hole better.

one thing I've realized is that the stance means very little. I change my stance to give myself a new perspective, and to keep things fresh, even if only on the practice green. as long as I control the stroke with my shoulders and keep everything as still as possible, I can focus on speed, and things seem to work fairly well.

I used to mess around with my putting a lot. I've gone with my stance narrow, wide sidesaddle. I've tried different grips. But then every round I would get people who thought I was Jesus or something because my putting style was different. Then I would just have to get into some long story about how I picked up this odd style. It just go old. I got tired of people giving me funny looks. Now I'm pretty conventional.
