May a Golfer Take Practice Swings With a Weighted Club?

During my last range session I started taking a couple of practice swings with my Momentus weighted iron prior to hitting every shot and the results were nothing short of amazing.

Under the Rules of Golf am I permitted to do this in play (assuming I put a normal grip on it and only carry 14 clubs including the weighted one)?

With a regular grip and only 13 other clubs you would be fine. No rule violation.

Q. May a player carry a weighted training club in addition to the 14 clubs selected for the round?

You may also carry a weighted training device like a Speed Stick, but you may not use it. I imagine (but am not sure) that a non-conforming weighted club would fall under this decision.

There's no weight limit on clubs. If the club conforms with the specs. in appendix II, it can have any weight.

A non-conforming weighted club does not fall under Dec. 14-3/10 - it's just a non-conforming club, covered under Rule 4-1.

Is there a need to behave like a jerk? Is there a limit on edits, or do you simply need to virtually puff your chest out?

 

I edited the post twice. Once when I realized my error and to add the first decision, and a second time to add the second decision since I couldn't cut an paste them at the same time. I also added formatting the second time to make it easier to read.

 

If it makes you feel more manly, I am sure you know more about the rules than I do. I even posted that I was unsure, which in polite company would be seen as an invite for clarification.

Medicus makes a weighted Maximus lob wedge that their website claims is legal for USGA play. I assume it could be one of your 14 clubs, and used for practice swings during play.

Now the question is can you use a swing weight while you play? You know those little round weights you put on any club to increase the weight of it. I would imagine this might be a better device since you can use the club you are going to hit.

How about swinging your club with the headcover it came with. I do that before the round. I don't think I have done it during. It is not a weighted headcover, just the one that came with the club. My intent when swinging is too loosen up. So, does this fall under the rule because my intent is to use like a training aid. How about swinging 2 clubs at once, like some guys do?

No problem on swinging 2 clubs. I don't think there is a problem swinging the driver with the non weighted cover as it is not designed as a training aid. Not 100% sure however...
