what does bore thru do? and why do people want it?

Callaway and Titleist have long been fans of this approach, with Callaway even using it in irons. However, from a clubmaker's perspective, any gains (which in my opinion are minimal at best) are more than offset by the extra time and effort required to reshaft these clubs.

 

Many companies that make high quality gear, such as Bridgestone, manage fine without bore through heads. I wish the others would too!

Interestiing perspective from a club mmaker and I can appreicate it. However, I think back to old days when Mac woods and Wilson Staff irons ruled--all were bore through. Even in metal woods today, I prefer bore through--just seems there has to be more stability in club.

 

I must confess, I am considering reshaffing a set of w/s 1969 bullet backs or w/s 1967 staffs with new shafts to see what they would be like with modern performance shafts and with length based off 5 iron at 38.25. I hit my Hogan 6 iron 4 apex 175-180 yards. Any suggestions?

Titleist claims the bore through feels more 'solid'. However, it is there for weight savings. The weight saved there can be moved around in the head by engineers for different effects. It feels more solid, because it makes the shaft play stiffer.

Callaway did away with the neck on woods, and shortened the hosel on their irons to get the weight savings and keep the heads very playable.

Alot of older irons, like Wilsons, had bore plugs, but were not bore through. This was to move weight and try to get the CoG closer to the center of the scorelines (for playability). They are not really borethoughs though. The hole at the bottom is smaller than the shaft and the shaft has pretty much the same insertion depth as a non-borethrough iron.

Callaway x tours are not bore thrue and about half the fairway woods and hybrids aren't. I hope they get rid of all them because they are a nightmare to reshaft, the irons require a parallel tip shaft with slits in the tip! then you install a bore plug, angle cut the tip and get it all flush and pretty.

I thought the claim was ----------- weight was not lost in the hosel, therefore more weight could be added to the perimeter, heel or toe of the head allowing for more forgiveness.

it makes the tip stiffer and like others have said it makes the club feel more "stable"

I think if you want a definitive answer, we've got to get Joe Kwok's opinion on this!

 

But I'll take the answer that the shaft plays a little stiffer. Explains why the reg in my K plays/feels stiffer than a regular reg, if that makes sense.
