Measuring iron lengths

where to measure from

From the end of the shaft, how far down the hosel to you go to measure iron length? I just received a Pro M from Macgragor and while the 7 iron should be 1/4" longer than my Hogan Apex Edge Pro 7 iron, it seems to be about 1" longer. I bought the Hogans used and wanted to know if they've been shortened. Thanks

To where it meets the ground in the playing position. There are no set length standards from company to company on how long each iron should be. You'd have to check the manufacturer's website for the club specifications.

Thanks for the reply. Specs for each are Macgregor Pro M 7 iron is 37" and Hogan Apex Edge Pro 7 iron is 36.75". The Macgregor measures at 37" but the Hogan is about 36". I've been fit for lie angle on the Hogans, but my miss is usually thin and towards the toe, would the shorter shaft have something to do with that?

Misses towards the toe could be a flat lie angle or a steep & OTT swing. The thin misses could be from them being too short.

 

Fwiw, there are different ways to measure clublengths:

a. Club set in a jig that is preset @ 60* lie angle, then the club is measured to the end of the shaft before gripping.

 

b. Club can be set against an adjustable sole plate that will allow the sole to rest flat agaist the sole plate for each club, then measure to the end of the ungripped shaft.
