Temporary green question

So, I'm out at my local muni and due to severe water damage, they cut a 524yd par 5 to a 300 yrd par 4 with a 'temporary green'. Actually, they basically cut a hole in the fairway and stuck a flag in it without even attempting to mow something that even remotely resembles a green. I hit two shots and a chip to within 2 feet of this 'hole'. The grass was something awful, nearly bald, mostly dried mud. I missed the 'putt' which was nearly impossible to make given the condition of the fairway. I scored myself a 4 on the hole given that I didn't miraculously bounce the ball over the mud into the 'cup'.

 

Do you think I should have taken the bogey when there was no chance in hell of making a decent putt at it? Mind you, I hadn't missed a 2 footer all day and shot my best round of the season (sure it was an 85, but I am a 19.1).

actually it probably doesnt matter. I would suggest you give yourself the score that the handicap system allows you on the hole for posting purposes. if you count it as a 4 and post from the tees you played it will skew your score, and your handicap.

 

A temporary green is bad enough but a birdie score posted on a hole that you cant play can only hurt your index.

For handicap purposes, you should post a score for that hole that is equal to 5 plus your handicap stroke allotment for that hole.

The one time I played a course with a temporary green, the green was a flag stuck in the fairway with about a 10' diameter circle painted around it. The rule was play until your ball is in the circle, then add one stroke.

 

Although I don't know the rule (or if there is one), I agree that the fairest scoring for handicap purposes is to take the 5 plus the strokes you are allotted for the hole.

We're playing a temporary green in my league. The regular green was heavily damaged by flooding a few years ago and still hasn't recovered. The local rule is that you play onto the temp green, and either hole your first putt, or pick up and add a stroke.

While it probably wouldn't be fair for handicap purposes or anything like that... I think a neat solution to using a temporary green cut into a fairway would be a larger cup. Something right around double the size of the usual cup. It would take away at least some of the roughness of the non-green but wouldn't be quite as forgiving as "get the ball to stop in the painted circle, then add 1 stroke and pick up the ball".
