Best Stock Shafts

for the most average of average golfers....
OK, so "the shaft is the engine of the club." That's what I learned from GolfWRX. I also learned that there really is no such thing as a "best" for shafts, because of different swings and all of that....

I think I fall into the "average" category: 8-iron goes about 145-ish and about 265 for my driver (when I don't slice it into the trees). 13-handicap.

Just out of curiousity (since I don't have money to spend!), what driver (within the last 3 years) do you think has the best stock setup, right out of the box?

Or is there no such question?

Is this too, really about what works for each individual?

I find Taylor Mades TP shafts to be pretty nice...good fit for my swing generally.

Your question begs a lot more questions. Do you tend to hit a high, mid or low tee shot? What is your current driver? What are your typical misses? How far do you hit your GOOD drives(be honest)? Does your ball hit and roll or drop and stop with your dirver? How atll are you and how much do you weigh?

Since I have tested literally thousands of OEM clubs and shafts in the past 10 years I can probably get you pretty close without going through a fitting.

I also really like the stock TP Fuji Reax 75 in my 425TP - I have never bought a custom shaft and have never had problems with a stock shaft and I swing at about 108-110 with the driver. Although some agree on this site that the TP shafts are pretty much the same as the retail versions. I wouldn't know - never tried any exotic shafts.

The V2 76 is also good for a stock shaft. Had it in a 905R - good combo.

Thanks everyone, for the replies!

Right now, I'm playing a 10.5 Burner Draw with the stock Re-ax shaft.

I would say my tee shots are pretty medium in terms of trajectory...I don't get that high, towering shots that I see at my local events, that's for sure. I kinda like the trajectory of the shots when I hit it well.

My ballflight is left-to-right, for sure...that's how it's been for the last year and a half, at least. So my misses are normally right. My only misses left will be when I straight-up pull it off the tee.

According to my iGolf GPS, my drives the other day were around the 260-ish range, after carry and roll. I really couldn't give too accurate a number in terms of carry-only. I hit one really good at 273, but there's no way I average that. Thing is, I'm finally beginning to get better contact on my drives. In previous weeks, I would be hitting weak slices on the heel measuring at about 220-230.

I'm 5-10...and about 190....OK, 195.

Yeah...so that's the thing, is that I've NEVER been fitted for a driver--or fitted for any club, for that matter. Everything I've been buying and playing is pretty much web-fitting and web-research....

Thanks again everyone for reading!

Well, first of all you do not want to go with a HiBore Xl, or Xls as they have a square to open club face---not good for your left-to-right ball flight. Second, not sure if you are playing an S flex in your R7 Draw but you may want to try an R flex. I know I will get a lot of grief here but of all the players I have fit, the ball flights you are describing indicate a shaft that is too light and/or too stiff. The ReAx shaft is mid-tip stiff and I would try something a little softer, like a ProLaunch Blue, or Aldila NVs which came stock in a lot of Callaway and Titleist models. You may want to try the FT-3 or Ft-5 with the stock Fujikura Speeder shaft. Another reader mentioned the TP 75 shaft in a Taylor Made 425...believe it or not this plays tip soft and may have a little more weight(swing weight) that could help you.

Mr. Mookie,

If you are just looking for an off the rack club, and to keep the price down, your demo day, or finding a golf range that has a bunch of test clubs are great options. It is pretty important to see the ball fly.

Actually, the major companies do a lot of testing to find shafts that work well with their specific head designs. (Not always are they successful, but you would be surprised at how much the bigger companies are involved in testing.)

When you are ready to get real serious- then do it right- spend some money, find an outdoor facility, Trackman, wide variety of connector shaft and heads, and of course, a skilled fitter.

Best of luck, 3
