Newbies guide to re-shafting/re-gripping clubs?

I'm the kind of person that likes to experiment with different kinds of setups and do it on a budget. It seems like it's easy to pick up pulled shafts on Ebay on the boards but the labor is always about 25 bucks to re-shaft a club. I would like to learn how to do it myself, as it doesn't seem like an incredibly complicated process. Are there any good write-up's guides for beginners that detail what materials you need to buy and the basic processes with step by step instructions?

I think golfworks used to sell a small book and the basics of clubmaking. Not sure if they still do though.

I'll take a look. Do most of you guys just learn by trial and error? I think I have the general gist of things but I'm sure I'm missing a lot of small details in between.

Read the links on the right side of the main page. It covers the basics for everything. I'm looking to take the plunge too and put together some demo clubs for shaft testing. My local Golfsmith is full of hacks I'm unwilling to pay good money to.

 

Just remember that a great clubmaker is worth their weight in gold. Anybody can slap a club together but some take it to an art form.

Re-gripping is relatively easy. The basic kit from Golfworks and you're on your way.

 

My theory on re-shafting is to sample local opinion from sharp guys and find a reliable clubmaker. Then if you bargain hunt on the shafts and do a great job in that aspect you can afford a professional re-shaft and still come out okay. I've been cherry picking one by one, including a $14.39 YS Power driver shaft on Saturday.

 

I'm not saying that's the ideal approach for everyone but I prefer it. I wanted to reshaft some old Haig Ultra irons but they are bore-thru and once I started evaluating the entire procedure I decided I was better off emphasizing the shaft acquisition aspect at lowest possible cost. It worked out great. Any shlock can Google and immediately pay the standard going rate for shafts.

I completely agree, part of the fun is hunting for a good deal and knowing you put your own hard labor into putting the club together instead of just dropping the cash. Thanks for the links guys, it's a good start. I just want to practice on a few older clubs to see if this is something I want to do long term. I always re-strung my own tennis rackets when I played on the high school team etc so this type of thing is down my alley.

I'm going to be reshafting a set of clubs soon too, the only thing I've yet to figure out is how to swingweight clubs. Its going to be complicated by the fact that I am going to put in butt extensions (I am reshafting with pulls) and that I am using midsize grips. I am hoping my local golf galaxy will help me with the swingweighting part, I know a few people that do the club repair there fairly well.
