905R shaft and loft guidance needed

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I am looking to try out a 905R and will buy it on ebay (obviously without hitting it). I know a lot of you guys game the club, and I'm looking for some suggestions in terms of loft and shaft. My swing speed is 95 mph with a medium tempo, and I'm a 6.6 index. I generally prefer stiff flex graphite shafts over regular flex, but the shafts that I'm used to playing (stock Callaway and Ping) are soft to begin with. I'm also used to playing around 10 degrees of loft, but again, this is with Ping and Callaway, so I'm sure the actual loft is something higher.

So, the two questions are: (1) 9.5 or 10.5; and (2) what would be a good shaft and flex. I'm seeing quite a few 905R's with the YS-6+ shaft and the Aldila NV-65. Do those shafts play soft or stiff?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

the nv should play to flex and be more of a mid launch but the ys-6+ will probably be better for you as i have found it a little soft in the stiff flex with my jerky swing around 101-105

Thanks. I played a YS-6 stiff in a GBB II 415 and I found it to be much too soft. Do you know whether the YS-6+ play stiffer than the original YS-6?

Don't over look the Proforce V2 76gram stock shaft Titleist offered. You might think it is to heavy or have a very low torque, but it is a great shaft in this head, and believe me I have tried the YS6+, NV65, Titleist Speeder, Diamana BB 63, 73,83, Diamana Redboard 63, V2 65gram, and the Fujikura 757. It is very smooth and easy to load for a heavier shaft and the dispersion is very tight with low to mid spin. I have two 905Rs, one with the V2 76gram, which is my gamer, and one I use to play around with different shaft combinations. The V2 65gram works well also if you are looking for a lighter weight shaft.

To answer your loft question, the 905R is a higher launching head that is a little higher spin. I think you probably couldn't go wrong with the 9.5 or 10.5 loft. Just make sure you pair it with a lower spinning shaft or your spin rates could go off the charts. I personally prefer the 9.5 because I am generally a high ball hitter and I want a more mid level boring trajectory with a spin rate around 25-2700. I feel I can control the ball better with this set up. I still get plenty of carry but more roll out as well.

Without the ability to get on a LM to see your launch angle and spin rates with a 905R you are just going to have to make an educated guess.

It's about the same but a tad firmer. It is geared to more of the smoother swinger or smoother tempo player. If you are an agressive swinger or agressive through the ball you may have some trouble controlling it. It has a higher torque with a mid kick point that promotes higher launch and carry distance. If your swing is 100+ then it is probably not the shaft for you.

Thanks. This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. Is the V2 65 gram shaft the same shaft that Ping offers as a stock option in the G10? The reason I ask is because I demoed that club/shaft and didn't like the feel. I felt that I had to swing too hard to load the shaft. I wouldn't go with the V2 76g shaft because my guess is that it would be too heavy.

I previously played a 975d and 975J-VS, both in 9.5. Does the 905r generally launch higher, lower or about the same as those heads?

The Ping G10 V2 shaft option is a high launch version. The high launch and the standard V2 are different. To answer you loft question, yes the 905R will launch higher than the 975D and the 975JVS. It has a farther back and lower CG that promotes this.

The 66g V2 is not a stock option with the 905R and would have to be custom ordered. You may get lucky and find one on ebay. The Ys6+ is probably the most popular shaft on the 905R and works well for smooth tempo players. The other "stock" shaft, Aldila NV is similar with a lower trajectory. The commonest loft is probably 9.5 and again works for a wide variety of players. You can try this link for a bit of help:
