Baby, I think I found my new happy home, now help me!

I am 50 yo woman playing now for 1.5 years with Callaway clones. Takes lessons fervently. Making great strides. Haven't been formally handicapped yet but would believe it to be about 30. I go to driving range 3-4 times/weeks Recently started playing on course more often. I have been notoriously buying equipment beyond my skill set. I have gap and lob wedge with that sucky handicap. Now my latest desire is to transition into muscle back clubs. Mainly for ego reasons. Also bidding on a Scotty Cameron putter while I know I can't putt for sh*t. I will upload my swing video to anyone who thinks they would have good advice for me. I am a golf straight up junkie and try to swing my clubs everyday if I could. Next thing is a golf school for me. Help me before I buy again.

As I read this board for the first time, I can tell I am with an elite group of women who play golf and not ladies who golf. Sorry about the slur as I feel so out of place when I go to buy equipment and everything is in pink. I aint a pink kind of gal, in fact I am a cavewoman that can't wait to get my game on the next level. Any tips, tricks, or insults are greatly encouraged.

welcome-you are in the right place!

Practice-lots of it-is good. You can't practice enough when you are starting out (lessons, too).

Stay away from the muscle backs, do yourself a favor. You don't need to make getting better a struggle.

Can't go wrong with a Cameron putter, you don't need to be a low handicap to have a primo putter!

Enjoy the journey...

It's not how...it's how many

My kinda woman! Welcome first!

I agree with Aimee, you're asking for some long and frustrating sessions and rounds if you head into muscle backs now. There's no reason you can't get fit into better clubs that aren't in powder blue or pink. Any company should be able to make you a custom set from a traditional male set and adjust the lofts or whatever to suit you. That goes for drivers too.

A putter is about feel. Play what you like. Heck, one of my putters is as expensive as a driver.

Welcome and we'll see you on the boards!

makeda1999, Way to go. I can relate to someone taking up the game or taking the game seriously when no longer a teenie bopper. Spend your money on lessons and driving range vs. attempting to grab a quick fix (ego or swing) purchasing clubs. Consider new/different clubs when/if your instructor suggests a change. Be aware that getting comfortable with a swing, stance, grip isn't an over-night affair. Once you are able to get around a course without embarrassment, look into joining a womens' league. Best thing I ever did for finding other women that golf, discovering new courses, learning the rules, getting into tournaments and other competitions, etc. Many public courses have womens' leagues -- you don't have to join a private club, and you don't have to regularly break 90 or even 100. If you're not free for "Ladies' Day" at your course, which is mid week, consider EWGA -- the local chapter here has a beginner section. I was lucky enough to find a weekend 18-hole league; but these are about as plentiful as hens' teeth.

Welcome

I check out this part of the forum due to my wife playing and getting tips for a 2 year female player. I have been playing for 30 years, still only play off about 10, (12 officially). I would love to hit muscle backs or blades style irons as I did when I was a 7 year old (that’s all we had then), but my old Ping G5 shovels are great. The forgiveness of a cavity back is designed for when you hit it wrong, and I still do. Its easy to get pulled towards better ego clubs but it’s the ease at which a bad shot goes straight that makes cavity backs better for amateurs.

If on a long par 4 you get to the green in 3 and take a further 3 to get the job done. Just focus on the chipping and putting you score will tumble like that. Work from the green back.

P.S My wife also doesn’t understand the pinks and pale blues. She just wants something she can hit, who cares about the colour!!

Makeda,

Welcome!!!

I agree with Debit.............get out and play!!! EWGA, Publinks, or any ladies club at the nearby course (although you may need to be free on weekdays for some of the ladies groups). My wife....well, she plays in all three......lol

With regards to your "pink" clubs issue, if you on track to become that "serious" player, you will probably develop a swing speed that outswings a ladies flex anyway. Your next set might be men's senior flex graphite shafts which can be fit to your height and solves the "pink" issue.

Should we bestow the nickname Og on the cavewoman now, or should we wait until we get to know her better???

Have a blast with the game and beginner or not, this board is a great place to get your questions answered.

Aloha,

Woo

If you're a beginner taking lessons, ask your instructor before making any purchase. I don't think that can be stressed enough. If nothing else it will allow your instructor to work in the new club to what he/she is teaching you.

99% of the time, your instructor will talk you out of spending the money. Your money would be better spent on greens fees.
