Nice slo motion film of my swing - help please?

Where is it all going wrong? Handicap 7, I seem to be swinging behind the line with a flying right elbow, and I reckon my base is not stable enough (watch the left foot dragging back).

Should I bend the knees more, push my shoulders back squarer at address?

Pushes and hooks definitely my loose shots.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Large Chris

I'm no swing expert but I will let you know what I can see from the video. Your swing looks very flat on your take away with not much width to it. You start taking the club inside the line very quickly. You do not have much width between you hands and your head because of this and you have little to no wrist ****. Due to this your club is almost resting on your shoulders at the top of your swing and a little past parallel. This is just what I see on you backswing. Work on taking the club away more down the line and getting your wrists cocked to get some width to your swing and elevating it more up and over you instead of around you. A little shorter swing might work a little better, but I think if you get the width in the swing and get away from being so flat, this will happen automatically. Again I am no expert, but this is what I see.

Your setup fom FV is good BUT from DTL your shoulders are WAY open in comparisson to your lower half and the hips are also open............in the 1st move away you sway load into your right side as the right knee goes outwards and the left hip moves off the line that it started on, due to this move you are dragging the club to the inside with your arms............due to this overly flat 1st move you then get the left arm too shallow relative to your shoulder plane an the club ends up long and across the line due to the arms/body/hands being out of "synch", due to the swaying nature of your 1st move away the right knee ends up "outside" the right ankle and the left knee has come across too much with the foot being pulled over and having little to no stability in the lower half...........you then push off the right side in the transition in an effort to deliver the club to the ball correctly and as this is happening your head goes "backwards" as a counter balance which gets the club WAY under and inside, from here you stall all the movements and the right foot is way up on the toe and the hands sling the club into the ball in an effort to square it up you are then fighting a BIG 2way miss due to the angle of attack/path/plane and release which relies SO much on the timing of it all.........

You need to get the swing to start off as a 1piece movement with the body leading the parade from the turning motion of the chest as this is the 1st this to move an the hands remain passive........you should "pre tor1ue" your right leg and feel that the kicked in motion of the right knee and the amount of pressure down this leg via the thigh muscle and through the instep into the floor, NOW as you turn back you need to feel the pressure from the thigh through the knee and into the floor is maintained........you will then feel the hips are turning in a small arc as the rotation of the upper body pulls the hips around in the backswing .........you'll feel the left hip and left knee being PULLED AROUND on their own lil' arcs toward the golf ball in the backswing..........done properly you'll feel a small amount of tension in both of them.........doing this you will feel a BIG stretch down the left side of the body from the left lat/obliques/abs/hip and it is this tension which will allow you to transition correctly and eliminate the BIG in to out action...........Make sure that when you are making the 1st move that the club stays "infront" of you and wide/in synch.......you can check the width at the top by collapsing both arms into the chest and the hands should touch the right pectoral, if they are wide and in synh, if you are too shallow they will hit the right shoulder/bicep which tells you they are too shallow...........hit balls with a nerf ball/foam football between your arms which will allow you to keep the club "infront" of you and in synch this will work massively.........also do the faldo drill ONCE you have got the pivot action down as this will enable you to keep the hands club "infront" of you......lastly feet together drills will help a ton with eliminating the lateral motion.

Sorry for the essay :man_in_love:

Hope it helps and makes sense :fool:

Cheers Dan

Many thanks for your time on this Dan, I'll be working hard on your suggestions.

Incidentally I play right handed but am left handed and I wonder if this is contributing to any swaying tendancies - no idea what the connection would be, but I play with a lot of different golfers of varying ability and no one else seems to loose stability as much.

  • 2 weeks later...

Update: I made the 'easy' setup change with my shoulders much squarer and this definitely helps, got a lovely draw going, but all the other changes are going to take a while to groove in.

Think one of my problems was getting hung up on a Faldo statement a few years ago about not getting too steep because you start slapping down on the ball and not delivering the club square from the inside.
