Just wanted to get your feedback on my setup

 

Driver - FT3 draw 10*

4 wood - Callaway X 17*

TM Rescue Dual 22*

Irons - Callaway Fusion 4 to PW

GW

SW - Cleveland CG 11 black Pearl

LW

Putter - Odyssey 2 ball blade

 

I chose this becuase I want to play 4 wedges.

Sounds good, like the Dave Pelz way. Curious, what wedges are you considering for the gap and Lob?

I have the same loft set up with different brands. Works great for me. The only time I have an issue is when I play a long par 5 and can't get there with my four wood (probably saves me shots though...I am not so accurate off the ground with a 13 degree three wood.)

Yeah I hear you. My thinking is that on courses with Long Par 5's I can switch my setup to go Driver, 3W, 5W & 24* hybrid and drop the 4 iron. My 5i is 26*.

 

The other way would be to drop a wedge but I just feel that distance control from over 175yards is not nearly as precise as it is from within 100 so I think I will always carry 4 wedges, Agrre with Pelz.

I remember from a broadcast years ago, one of the few insightful things I've ever heard Curtis Strange say: "How many more important shots do you have a round from inside 130 yards, then over 200?"

 

He was commenting on some guys on tour adding a fourth wedge to the bag to help fill in yardage gaps, at the expense of a long iron or fairway wood. His arguement was, that, under pressure, its always better to take a comfortable club for the yardage and make a full swing, rather than try to take something off or swing really hard. He thought amatuers would benefit due to the fact that they face many more instances where a wedge shot can make or break thier round then a 240 yard shot that they shouldn't try to pull off in the first place.

Looks good.....if you wanted to get a 3-wood in your bag you could ditch your 4iron or move to a 19 degree rescue and ditch the 4wood. Nice set of sticks hope you play well with them.

I love it. My set up is very similar to yours. I carry a 3 wood just in case I need to lay up off the tee. I also carry a 7 wood in leu of carrying a hybrid just because I haven't found one I can hit consistantly. How long have you been playing this set up???

I am biased, as it is very similar to mine, so I like it. Although, I was originally going with just 3 wedges (for 13 clubs total) but I found a deal on wedges to match my irons so I now I will be going with 4.

looks good.. when i get a sq fw it will be a 4wd as well...

I went to this same makeup last year (and sought validation here before I did).

 

I am about to put a set of irons in play that have a 48* PW - so I am toying with adding 53* and 58* wedges instead of my current P (46*) G (51*) S (56*) and L(60*) set up - in that case I would add a strong 3w most likely.

 

But - if your set has a 46* PW as most do these days it seems, then the set-up you contemplate works great.

 

As an aside - when did the P wedge go from 49-50* to 45-46* degrees? I think it was in the 90's industry wide. I for one think it's dumb. I don't care if, because of strengthened lofts, I can hit my P wedge as long as I used to hit my 9i. I just want to have consistent and known gaps between the 14 clubs in my bag . . .

Yeah, good question. And as a follow up when will wedges start to meet the new PW's? It seems now that most gap wedges are 52* and sand wedges are 56. So if you have a 44* PW you now need a gap wedge between your pitching wedge and your gap wedge!
