Mizuno Mx-23 Graphite - High Swingweight

I picked up a set of MX-23 5-P + 52, 56, 60 MP Wedges. Very used, but not abused in any way. What I first caught my eye was the matching Mizuno Exsar Regular graphite shafts on the wedges. Mizuno did not offer MX-23 wedges other than the PW. They had GP Tour Velvet Mid Size grips on them. They felt a little head heavy, but I thought it have been just my imagination at work.

 

I prefer a regular or smaller grip and regripped them with GP DD2 Red Standard size. After I regrip I always check the Swingweights. Wow! D5 and D6 on the irons and D8-EI on the MP wedges. I don't recall ever seeing swingweights like these with regular length graphite shafts.

 

I think these must be a custom order. The graphite shafts on the wedges may a good indication. The lengths are standard. I have not pulled a head to see about lead shaft tips, etc., but I need to do something because these warclubs are a bit too heavy for me.

 

Can anyone enlighten me on why they have such high swingweights?

Just 2 cents from someone who has used and owned a couple of them over the years.... It may well be that those heads were originally installed with steel shafts. The MX-23's come out of the factory with D-1 swing weights especially in the long to mid irons. I had a set that was originally shafted with True Tempers and when I had some factory Exsar shafts installed, they had a swing weight of D5 too. I have been told that Mizuno has "A" heads and "B' heads which they sort out and designate for use with steel or graphite. I don't know how accurate this info is. I also have an MX-23 set that came straight from the dealer with the Exsar shafts and they swingweight at D1. When I tried installing NS Pro steel shafts on them, they ended up as C7. I decided not to mess with them anymore and had the graphite shafts re-installed. Just a tip. You might want to check those lengths again, it could well be that those clubs are about 1/2 - 3/4 inch longer than standard causing the swingweight to read that way. It may even just be the grip not being completely seated on the shaft hence giving you a false reading. Hope this helps somehow.

In my experience putting graphite shafts in "steel heads" gives a much lighter, not heavier, swingweight. I know Mizuno had/have heavier heads selected to be used with graphite shafts. I have a set of graphite shaft Grad MP's and they are about D1 with standard Mizuno lengths. Some manufacturers use the same weight heads for all shafts and make the graphite shafts 1/2 to 1 inch longer to get a D0 Swingweight.

 

I had another set of grips on the MX-25 that gave even higher swingweights. The GPTV Mid size are heavier (abot 62g as I recall) and the give a DD4 swingweight in the 6i. Thr grips are installed correctly -- I always check swingweight and length if necessary after installing grips. I also give the butt of each grip a couple of raps with a rubber mallet as the last step to make sure they are fully seated.

 

This set must have very heavy heads or tip weights. I guess, unlees I hear or think of anything else, I'll have to pull a head to know for sure.
