Layoffs

The Lobo

Recommended Posts

I started up my membership again here after having to rescind it in November - came back from a forced hiatus due to the economy and lack of business at the Caterpillar dealership I currently work at (service/warranty clerk).

I retired from military service in June, and wanted a job to occupy my time (my wife DID NOT!!! like me just hanging around the house or the golf course).

Surprise, in November, after two months on the job - layoff... "come back in March".

Anyone else felling the effects? :black eye:

Thanks for your service. My family is very lucky...my wife and I are both working, and we have a healthy 10 yo. Seems like on Saturday morning when I have had a few minutes to digest the previous weeks headlong rush towards socialism I really wonder how my kid's adult life is going to be. For the first time I'm thinking about keeping my business (and working longer) since my retirement account has been devastated and my kid might need a place to work.

So yeah it effects us.

I got out of the Army in May '06. Got in the UA Pipefitter's apprenticeship program. I'm a midway through my 3rd year of the 5 year program. Work is way-y slow right now. I've been on the bench since early November!!!

Things gotta get better cuz' they can't get much worse. I'm considering reenlisting if I don't get some work soon, maybe National Guard recruiter or something. Can't live without a paycheck. Work slows down, but the bills don't!!!

My family has been lucky thus far, Parents still have their jobs, My sisters have theirs, I have mine (Which is a blessing as both my parents and myself work at nonprofits who have been hit hard with the lack of donations), but I know plenty of people who have been hit pretty hard by it. Not even just losing their jobs, but a lot of people who still have their jobs have lost just about all of the savings they have had for retirement which is very tough.

That and I go to ASU, and they are doing some MASSIVE cutbacks around here in terms of forced unpaid time of for staff and cutting back on programs due to the lack of state funding. For example they are moving all the nursing program to 1 campus, cutting the size of it in half, they are merging a lot of the engineering majors, they are potentially closing 2 of the 4 campuses now, and are really trying to centralize things. They sent out a long email a few weeks ago about the forced time off, which could cause a potential 20% cut in pay for some employees. Things are definitely tight.

Yeah, I have to remind myself that I'm lucky to be secure in my job (as much as you can be) after we got an email informing us that everyone's salaries are being cut by 3% next month. It helps prevent mass layoffs, so I am behind the reasoning as much as it will sting a little.

It's not how...it's how many

I wish I could get laid off, I'd make more money. I work as a furniture mover. We stay just busy enough that I can't collect. So I make about $150-$250 a week and the normal avg. of about $150 a week in tips, forget it. Everyone is so broke right now we're lucky if we get one $20 bill a week.

I am very fortunate to be working, but currently the field we are in (construction, I am a structural engineer) are in a world of pain, more than any other field. Luckily for me, the higher ups have found work in other markets that aren't as impacted such as civil works, education, energy and health care. But I do feel for a lot of people who have been laid off. I just count my blessing that I still have a job for now.

I work for a large defense contractor, we are going to be laying off around 750 people in the next 3 months. Not too bad, but I was told last year my position might be one of them. So I went and found a more secure job in the same company. My boss said he can keep me now because he fought for me and said I was a really good worker. Now he's losing me to some other place because I don't have faith in my job security at my current job.

I think companies should do a better job of letting go of low hanging (spoiled) fruit first. Get rid of all low performers so your top performers don't start leaving you. Los Angeles county has above 10% unemployement! My parents home county in Ohio is 13% and rising. Tough times, I'm getting married in June, my fiancee's step-dad who is paying just got layed off too.

Sorry to hear that. But wasn't Cat one of the big headliners in Obuma's porkulus project? Wish he would stop spreading the wealth and start spreading the work ethic of hard working Americans.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
