Wondering on the rule

There were some guys talking in the clubhouse about a ruling as to a hazard and an unplayable lie. There are some "ponds" on the course that are often partially dried out. If a ball is in one of these it is a red stake hazard. You can hit out, right, without taking a stroke? Now, can you take an unplayable and drop inside the hazard rather than go back on the line of point of entry? The reason being is to go back and drop on that line, in this case will put 3 trees in a direct line to the hole, plus make it like a 3-4iron shot vs. an 8-9i.

The player may deem his ball unplayable at any place on the course, except when the ball is in a water hazard.

There is no penalty stroke for hitting into or out of a hazard. The penalty stroke only applies if you take relief.

 

Now, can you take an unplayable and drop inside the hazard rather than go back on the line of point of entry? The reason being is to go back and drop on that line, in this case will put 3 trees in a direct line to the hole, plus make it like a 3-4iron shot vs. an 8-9i.

 

As was previously posted, you can not take an unplayable lie in a water hazard.

red stakes would mean lateral hazard not water hazard I think, (unless lateral hazard and water are the same thing)

 

you can play from in one (like a bunker, you can't ground your club) with no penalty, but I don't think you can take an unplayable drop inside of one

You can take an unplayable as long as you are not in a water hazard (lateral or not makes no difference). You can take an unplayable in a bunker.
