MOI brass blade proto

Test session #2 coming!
Hi Everyone,

This is a prototype of a new putter, another brass blade. This one is longer heel-toe (4.5" as opposed to 4" to 4.125"), and has a much higher MOI due to more weight in the heel and toe. The MOI value is up there with most mallets, it is very stable (MOI found using CAD software).

Specs (proto); Head weight: 359g
Lie: 72*
Length: 33.5"
Loft: 2.5*
Swingweight: D8
Shaft: UST Frequency Filtered
Grip: Lambkin Deep Etched
Center shafted and face-balanced

Again this model will be tested by 4 Golfwrx members, 3 have already been selected. They are: OakieISI (marshall), cpa49707 (marshall) and Sakman (member). All 3 are regular posters and contributors to the site, and have shown interest and enthusiasm through PM’s. I have a couple of people in mind for the tester 4, and will make a decision in a few days.

To start I will show a new quality control measure that is being implemented. After the brass stock’s outer dimensions of length, width, height have been milled, the surfaces are checked for flatness and perpendicularity to each other. I use a granite surface plate that is flat to .0001" from corner to corner, a .001" feeler gauge, and a V-block that I made in college.

To check for flatness, I lay the surface that I am checking on the surface plate (ensuring it is clean). Then it is checked with a .001" feeler gauge, which I try to slip under the part all around the perimeter. If the gauge doesn’t go (which it didn’t) the surface is flat to .001" or less. This is done on the 4 large surfaces to ensure they are flat.

To check for perpendicularity of one surface to another, the part is placed on the surface plate, and an edge of the V-block is butted against it. Then I try to slip the .001" feeler gauge through. If it doesn’t go (which it didn’t), the surfaces are perpendicular to within .001".

The face of the putter was also checked for flatness after it was milled, it was flat to within .001"

I have started doing this for several reasons. The first is to minimise the amount of material removed during finishing operations so that I can be as accurate as possible with final weights and reduce finishing time. The second is so that I can ensure that the face is very flat. The final reason is to improve overall quality and accuracy of machining and produce a better product.

The machining of this model was very similar to the first but I want to show the process of milling out the cutout.

The first step was to locate the edge of the part with an edge finder and move the table the appropriate amount after. There is a detailed explanation and pic of this process in the “making of beruo’s putter” thread which was posted previously. The next step was to set the boundaries of the cutout ( location, width and depth) with a 4 flute HSS end mill. After this was done a single insert fly cutter was used to remove the remaining material. Pics are below.

Here is the finished product. It was overcast so I apologize in advance for the quality of pics. Finish is medium satin on top and in the cavity and a light satin on the bottom, sides, and back. The face was lightly brushed with Scotchbright to highlight the shallow millmarks.

Stamping my initials one inside the other on the face was inspired by 16th century German artist Albrecht Durer.

Here is the putter at address and the UST Frequency Filtered shaft.

I have only putted on the carpet so have limited exposure to the feel (short putts) but will try to explain it the best I can. When you hit a putt in the sweetspot you feel virtually nothing. When hit off centre (yes, I did this on purpose!) you can feel one very distinct “click”. There is no mistaking a centre hit from an off centre one. As far as I can tell, the shaft works as designed.

If anyone has any comments or questions, feel free.

Serge

Matt,

You won't have to wait too long, I'm starting yours tommorow. I'm doing it a little differently this time, doing one at a time from start to finish.

So RH, 350g, 71* lie, 35" length, logo centered in back cavity, OAKS proto 2006 on sole?

I have 2, 3, and 5mm stamps (3mm is 1/8th" which is standard).

Do you want any other stampings? Initials or any of these:Stamps

I have the heart, diamond, spade, and club but could get any of the others.

With regards to finishing, I can do coarse, medium and light satin. Also light (buffed by hand), and heavy (done twice, buffed with Dremel) polish finishes. You can have any combination of finishes you want. Do you want the mill marks left on the face or one of the finishes listed above on the face?

I'll be sending you pics and in contact with you soon,

Serge

great looking putter serge! i realy love the look of it.

once agian i would be very interested in testing one

You're tester number 4!

Please post or PM me the dexterity (RH/LH), weight, lie angle, length, stampings (see my previous post for theme stamps), and finish (see my previous post).

If you want to think a little while about stampings, paintfill, finish etc.. that's fine.

Talk to you soon,

Serge

Serge, another fine product. Once again you pulled off an amazing looking putter. I am very anxious to try one out. I'm glad there are people in this world with your talents. I have enough trouble cutting firewood to length with a chain saw LOL

I bow down to Serge.

Terry,

Thanks for the kind words. :drinks: You'll have one in 2-3 weeks.

I can't wait until I get that CNC (ordering end of April) and the aluminum MOI putter gets made. That should get some attention.

Talk to you soon,

Serge

Serge I'd be interested in trying one out if you're still looking. The weather here in ohio still isn't the best testing weather yet but its getting there. My practice time may be a little more limited with the little one here now so I need a putter that works with little effort. :drinks:

Sorry bro you're just a little short of posts to be a tester. I'll be coming out with an aluminum MOI with adjustable weighting when I get that CNC that will need testing in 2-3 months. So get posting!

Also, you should be spending time with your daughter and wife, not a putter. I don't want to get you in trouble.

Serge
