How much difference is 22* from 23*

FT Hybrid vs. Rescue Dual
I'm just curious as to the differences in these lofts. Obviously, it's 1*, but a buddy of mine told me that he thinks that I should have purchased the Dual instead of the FT, because i'm replacing the 4 iron which are TaylorMade. I chose the FT because of I wanted something different and because most 4 irons are 23*, my TaylorMade is 23*, as a matter of fact. Why did TaylorMade make it's 4 iron replacement 22*???

Should I change???

My golf pro said that I should not change my shaft from graphite to steel, because he thinks hybrids were meant for graphite shafts. I'm hitting all over the place with this club.

What's your opinion???

It's important to remember that hybrids and irons have very different centers of gravity and launch the ball differently. For that reason, a lot of people suggest picking a hybrid that's got more loft than the iron it's going to replace (for a 4 iron replacement buy a 5 hybrid). The reason being that hybrids have a center of gravity that's much lower and deeper than an iron. Because of this it will launch the ball much higher and higher ball flight = greater carry. I'm demoing 20* hybrids right now to replace 2 irons even though they all say 3 hybrid on them.

I think it's really important to demo hybrids on course since they often launch differently and are mislabeled by OEM's. Take them out and see how far each one hits and then make your decision. It's very difficult to tell what you need otherwise.

As far as graphite vs. steel, OEM's are putting long ultralight graphite shafts in most of their hybrids (55-75g). That can be one heck of a transition from a 130g dynamic gold and can be part of the cause of your inconsitencies. I'm probalby going steel stock and then reshafting in a month or so with heavy weight graphite (fuji banzai, Accra Tour HF) at a shorter length.

Hope that helps.

i also want to add to what taylormadefan said and that is the shafts are longer in hybrids than irons too, which will make them longer too. i agree that you want more loft in the hybrid than the iron you are replacing.

I find that my TM Rescue Mid 4 is the replacement for my 3i... I could be because I can't hit my 3i very well.

Actually I got to fool around on the range some more to see if I can't get a two for one by pulling my 3 and 4 iron for one rescue. Or maybe I'll pull my 5w and 3i and leave my 4i... sorry thinking out loud... but either way I need to make some room for a gap wedge.

It's finally time to drop your standard 4-iron. Take an MD (4-iron loft, 2-iron shaft length) and thank us in the morning. Our testers reported that it's much longer than their current 4-iron and much easier to get airborne.

Why would they say this??? FROM JANUARY 2006 GOLF MAGAZINE article

All Hybrids are different too. I switched from a 17* heavenwood to a 16* rescue dual TP and I was worried about the new club hitting too low, but I have found the TM actually hits it higher than the Callaway.

i'm gonna backup rmbudd3 on this point to. my nike slingshot tour 18* hits the ball much further than my taylormade rescue dual tp 19*. the rescue dual launches the ball high, and also puts a lot of spin on the ball. great qualities in a hybrid, except this time of year when it is real windy.
