I use a HOF Jamie Sadlowki XXX flex in my setup. Best shaft i have ever used, i hit low spin bombs with that bad boy, you cant go wrong with either shaft. HOF for me though.

SJack,

Sourcing the best Longdrive (LD) shaft is not simply about finding the best made, or the shaft currently in vogue, it is about finding the shaft which best suits your swing profile (style).

If one were to massively over-simplify how quality LD shafts bend one would say that a shaft predominantly bends high (i.e. near the grip), or alternatively bends low - i.e. near the tip. One could loosely describe a HOF shaft as high flexing (HF) and a UST V2 LD as low flexing (LF).

When I provide a customer with two drivers and one has a LF shaft in it, and the other has a HF shaft in it then invariably one type works much better for that player. Once one has broadly fitted the shaft's flex profile to a player's swing profile then one can discuss brand, flex, length etc.

If a player is best suited to a LF shaft then (again speaking generally) the cheapest nastiest LF shaft will be better suited to that player than a fantastically manufactured HF shaft.

That is what should happen in a perfect sensible LD world, i.e. one would choose the right type of flexing shaft for you irrespective of what anyone else is playing.

What actually happens is similar to what occurs in golf, namely if Tiger Woods plays brand XXY then the golfing public rush out to buy brand XXY. Likewise in LD if a player wins the World LD Champs. with brand PPQ then Longdrivers rush out en bloc to buy shaft PPQ even though it may be totally unsuitable for their swing.

HOF build shafts of exceptional quality, but they do not suit everyone. They are well worth testing as are UST. There are other great shaft's out there too such as those distributed by SK Fiber. It only takes one recent WLDC win for the sales of any shaft to multiply one hundred fold!

Good points thanks for the info, i am newer to long drive and trying to learn everything i can. I know that i cant just hit what ever is hott at the time and what everone eles likes. I know i need to try them out for myself, i just like seeing what other people have to say about there experiences and prefrences. I need to go get fit for whats best for me for ld but the closes place i know of is in north dallas and thats a good 4 1/2 hour drive. But anyway thanks for the info and the help.

sjack,

I appreciate that what I find beautiful about the USA - its vast area and wide open spaces causes you guys serious travel problems. Also, whilst it is easy for someone like me to advise to try different equipment it isn't easy due to cost and knowing exactly where to start!

Any solution costs time and money and not a small amount of commitment. I personally recall travelling from England to Dallas in '07 principally to meet Art Sellinger and receive a lesson from 'the king!' I recall his brilliant advice, which I have only recently taken on board (as I dismissed it at the time), and such was to first learn to hit a ball properly with an iron. Learning to hit a ball correctly from the inside; on the upstroke; working it right to left and left to right on the breeze is so much easier with a 3 iron, and one's swing does not so easily collapse from overwork as it can do working with a driver for most of the time. One good tip can change your LD / golfing life for ever.

So, reading what you say, my little tip for you is to wait for the list of WLDC (World Long Drive Championship) Local and Regional events to appear on www.longdrivers.com (likely it will be posted soon) and then travel to an event a couple of hours early; meet some of the guys on the practice range, and ask if they have an old driver or two which you could maybe hit a few balls with.

Unlike golf, in LD we do not have hundreds of shafts to choose from as 48" X, XX, and XXX shafts are not made by most shaft manufacturers. But choices do exist. Try to have a go with both high flexing and low flexing shafts, and initially avoid trying out drivers whose shafts have been 'tipped,' i.e. had part of their tip removed, as they will not give you a feel for how they were originally designed to play.

Good luck with your quest and please say "Hello" in October in Mesquite if you attend the WLDC finals.

wow man brilliant advice. that is why i like my HOF shaft better is because of the high flex point, again the Proforce V2 LD is a great shaft i just get weird spinners from it, like some wont spin at all and others will balloon like a mofo, but thats just me. try as many shafts as you can, the HOF stuff was just my favorite, hell harrison has some sick stuff, and Accuflex if you can find some are another one of my favorites, i still use the creation in my driver and its my favorite shaft of all time lol. like he said its all what works for you, you may love either one you may like both or neither. hope you find the perfect one. just make sure you hit them outside cause launch monitors can be sketchy lol. have fun and good luck bro!

I do not have any experience with HOF, but I can tell you that I bought a proforce v2 on the recommendation of many people and ended up breaking it in half over a tree at the course. And I'm not a club thrower or anything, I just had enough of that shaft. The shaft is dead -- no life.

I think the point though is that you really have to try out a few and find one that works for you. Its a buy, test, sell on ebay, repeat process -- don't throw out the box that your shaft comes in, you may need it!

A lot of good info here. I play a few different shafts. I played AOG at worlds good shaft but now that I am more experienced and have learned the importance of the shaft. Alot of times the shaft will have more of an effect on distance then the Head will. My advice is to find a Head that you loike the Looks, Sound and feel and start buying shafts to see what you like the best.

NavyLD12,

Good luck at this year's 'Worlds.' A lot of player's love AOG's shafts but sadly Kenny's business appears, alongside many others, to have fallen in the economic recession. I believe that approaches have been made to acquire Kenny's shaft side of his business but I do not know the outcome.

I wish Kenny and his former customers well. And, best wishes to all of us still standing (just)!
