The Great White - Doral

Need opinions to see if I am not crazy

I had a chance to play Doral this week. Awesome facility, Blue Monster is all its billed to be. However I also played Greg Norman designed Great White or White course. Now I am a 15 hndcp but am constantly working on my game. That being said, I don't hit every fairway every time. Shocker. What got me was the rough or Non rough on this course. If you miss a fairway here, you are basically in a sandy rock like surface. Harder than sand with small pebbles but not full on rock. I asked and the guys there said, its okay to ground your club and hit as normal. But I couldn't do it as my clubs would be trashed after one swing? Each time I needed to, I used a friends rental callaway x22's to hit my shot. Needless to say the clubs were a mess.

Does anyone find it odd that average/hacker players play on this course regularly? Do people who play here not care about their sticks?

When I asked the question in the pro shop I was told "yeah your clubs might get scratched, but you need to hit the fairway" Ok I get it but really?

I played a colege golf tournament there a while back and couldn't remember how bad my clubs where I was really impressed with the golf course though!!! maybe it has gotten harder since i was there but I don't remember anyone have any issues with hitting balls from the Crushed shells!

Norman likes to use waste bunkers filled with coquina shells...it is one of his trademarks. Maybe its an Aussie thing...don't know...


For the record, I do not care for the White Course at the Doral Resort. I think the Blue, Gold, Red, and White Courses are much better designs.

That said, there is one fantastic Norman course in South Florida...that being Parkland Golf and Country Club which is located about 50 miles north of the Doral Resort off the Sawgrass Expressway at the fringe of the Everglades. Although it is a Private Club, but there are ways to gain access from WCI Commuities who built the homes there.

It is also the best conditioned course in all of South Florida.

love the white course because its so different. Didnt really notice any problem with scratching. Will check next time though. Maybe its that my clubs are old!

I played the white course about two years ago and did notice a few dings on the clubs but nothing major and I take a pretty deep divot and play forged irons. My Dad loves the course and is actually down there this week but I wasn't a huge fan. I preferred the Blue course. The white was a little too packed in for me.
