Reshafting J33R 460 with PM702X

Proper Insertion Depth/Tipping?
I'm having my J33R reshafted with a PM702 X-Stiff. Currently playing a PM702 Stiff (tipped 1/2"). Great combo, but want to tighten up dispersion and bring down launch/spin a little more.

Does anyone know if I need to have the shaft tipped for insertion into a J33R, in order to play to flex. I know that some heads require that the shafts be tipped in order to play to flex, and others do not. I'm not technical enough to know.

Any help?

Thanks Dyno. One more question.

I'm currently playing a PM702 Stiff (tipped 1/2"). However, I sometimes overpower the shaft, producing undesired draws/hooks. Plus, launch and spin numbers slightly too high.

Just received a new PM702 X-Stiff shaft. Would you recommend inserting it untipped initially? Or just go ahead and tip it 1/2". Not sure how much difference I'd see between Stiff (tipped 1/2") and X-Stiff (untipped).

Thoughts?

Shaboom. I don't know much about the PM702 but judging from the specs, it drops 0.2* in torque and gains 3g in the transition from S to X. Usually you see a rise in butt stiffness and tip stiffness simultaneously because those extra plies to tighten the shaft havet o go somewhere. X flex then should have a stiffer tip section than S though I don't think it'll be enough difference to overcome the lack of tipping into a 2" BBGM head. J33's tend to come in 204-205g so that softens the shaft in addition to the longer length you like to play.

Without more info about the clubs you play now and your swing, it's just a guess. Bottomline for the X is, if you want it to play to it's designed flex, you need to tip it about 1/2". Now how stiff a GD PM702 X flex is best judged by play testing.....and I can't tell you that. GD is pretty good at hitting their flex target though so I would expect it to be no stiffer than a 757 X which you already have. I don't know if your 757 is inserted full or blind bored so can't compare the two. Stiffer tipped shafts tend to be in the 260 cpm range at 45" for S flex and 270-275 for X flex.

The 757 was factory-installed by Titleist. I would assume that it was inserted full bore. Even though the 757 X is a heavier shaft, it does not feel any stiffer to me than the PM702 S (tipped 1/2"). Maybe because the PM702 is more tip stiff.

I'm aiming to bring down my launch by 1-2 degrees and my spin by 200-300+ rpms with the PM702 X-Stiff. Sounds like I might need to tip that shaft 1/2" as well, to hit the intended flex, and to see a full flex difference.

Is there any reason I shouldn't go ahead and install untipped, and then remove and tip if necessary? For example, does it sometimes weaken the tip to remove it?

Yeah, Titleist full bores everything.

There's nothing wrong with installing untipped then pulling later. The J33 is an extremely easy pull so as long as minimal heat is used, no problem. Relatively new epoxy tends to break down pretty easily too. Untipped would be the most prudent approach. The 702 being a tip stiff shaft should be able to handle it no problem. If you were using something with an active tip, definitely tip into a long BBGM.

It'd be easier to figure out if you did some freq testing beforehand but the tipped S should still be about 1/2 flex softer than untipped X. However sticking X untipped into the J33 will cause the tip to play alittle softer than intended so your hooks may not go away. Try and see. Butt cut long and mark where you need to choke up with tape. I often blow on a midsize grip so choking up doesn't result in an excessively thin grip diameter.

Dyno,

Went for broke and had the PM702X installed, tipped 1/2". Also, had it cut to 46.5", in the unlikely event that I wanted to tip trim more later. After installation by my local shop, they said that the tipped PM702X is playing north of an X-Stiff, closer to an XX compared with many other shafts. The PM702 is a really stout shaft for 73 grams.

Bottom line is . . . it's perfect! Haven't got on the monitor yet. But took it to the driving range. Hit slight fades on the first few. Adjusted my swing and then started hitting flat bombs that landed and then ran like scared rabbits into the far tree line. Every one straight or with a slight draw. And no ballooning. Can't believe how much more control I have with the X-Stiff.

I'm in love. Now I just need to get it butt-cut down to my playing length of 45.75".

Thanks for your help.
