Callaway Upro Accuracy

Recommended Posts

I have played my Upro for about 5 rounds now and I am beginning to wonder if my gps accuracy is off. First off I play with my friend who has the SG5 and another friend whom as the SGX and both of theirs state similar distances, but as for the Upro it was off by as much as 6 yards at some points. Another thing is, when I step up to the tee and find the yardage posting that is normally by where we tee off and on the stone would say a number which means the middle of the green, and my upro would be off as well. Im not talking by 1-2 yards but like i said up to 6 yards off.

I am afraid to mess with the calibration function. I guess i want to be able to stand on the tee and the upro saying exactly or as close as possible to what it says on the score sheet.

Any advice???

You could compare it to several laser readings, and if you're still 6+ yards off, you may want to try calibrating it. Of course, you have to remember that the laser also has a few yards margin of error, but it could support what the other gps seem to suggest. I just happened to be playing with someone this weekend who was using a laser, and my upro was consistently within 5 yards (or less) of his readings.

In my case, I can't hit a shot consistently enough that 5 yards difference is going to make a difference in my result, so I don't worry too much about it :-). However, if you're a low handicapper, I can understand the need for that smaller margin of error; but then a laser is probably going to be better in that case (to shoot the pin exactly, vs. front/middle/back readings)

My uPro is alway within 2-3 yards max of markers on the par 3's, but sometimes there is an anomaly every once in while.

I use the pro mode mostly and get a yardage directly to where I think the pin is on the green, and if it's close to the edge or a bunker I use pro mode to measure those too. That usually gives me about a 8-10 yard "safe" range that I have to hit the ball, so then I select the club based on that. I don't really use the front-middle-back yardages.

I have never recalibrated the GPS though, so I would definately have customer service on the line when doing that.

I have also noticed that when some of the courses I play have been updated to v2.0, the yardages are a little better. Maybe call customer service if your course is a v1.0 and tell them you think you are always off by 6 or yards, they might look into it and release v2.0 update.

I've only had my Upro for a little over a week and I typically play with a buddy that has the Bushnell V2 laser. We always compare readings when we get a white (middle) pin and the readings are mostly similar (within 1-2 yards). For me the Upro beats the laser when playing a course for the first time. My buddy can laser the pin and get a reading, but my Upro will give me a front, middle, back distance. This then tells me how much green I have behind a front pin, or how much green is in front of a back pin.

GPS also helps when you are in the woods, the other fairway or have visual obstruction all things the laser does not do. Mine is usually within 2-3 yds and that works for everyone in my opinion.

Not to mention the GPS will work for all those midnight rounds of golf.

There is a good chance that the difference is mapping rather than something that can be calibrated out.

Dave, calibrating would take care of any mapping issues for that specific course. If they map a course and your unit says 5 yards longer than another unit, when you calibrate it you are basically going to adjust your reference point on the map forward 5 yards to where you are showing up on the map. Once that is done, the whole map is shifted so your distance relativity stays the same. If you know your calibrations is wrong and you fix it you should not have issues. The problem is figuring out if the calibration is truly wrong or if it is just a bad signal that day, etc.. Also, you might have to adjust your calibration on each course.

Thanks for the clarification. I just assumed that 'calibration' was related to the measurement process (for GPS it would probably be some kind of WAAS thing if it exists at all). I didn't realize that mapping adjustments was called 'calibration' in the uPro world.
