Readability for the up close challenged

Recommended Posts

I'm new here.

I've had a Bushnell Pinseeker for years. It works great on a pin...not so much on anything else. Now that I'm getting back into competitive play I want to get a GPS so I can see the hole, how far to that tree, bunker, water, etc. Big problem, my up close eyesight sucks. I'm not taking readers out on the course (I COULD wear them backwards on my head, eh? :blind:)

I've spent the weekend looking at the various units and it looks like the Sonocaddie may fit the bill. Does anyone have any feedback about this one or other GPS units on readability for old guys?

Thanks in advance!

great post! im 53 a 7hcp and use +3 readers. my daughter took my golf logix gps to college to use for fall golf, so ineed another one with big numbers. i can read the golf buddy numbers pretty good. i really only care about distance to green (ft. middle and bk.) and hazards. i also like all the courses already loaded because when i travel i may not know all the courses i will be playing. anything else besides golf buddy like this? the garmin g2 or 3? has to small of numbers on front and back of the green, to middle was fine.

please help us old guys.

The Golf Guru 4 has some pretty large, easily readable numbers on all screens but the graphic view of the hole, what they refer to as their AerVu courses.

I'm just starting on that path (+1.25) but it was a concern for me as well when was looking. I have a Callaway uPro and while I like it's small form factor I was concerned about how long I would feel that way.

Currently I have no problem reading the screen. It has an option for a larger font that I may need one day. When you do so, it may mean that some of the yardages are not displayed, but they have a way of highlighting those so you can zoom in to see them.

I highly recommend the Sonocaddie V-300. I have had the V-300 for 2 or 3 yrs and really like it. It is Very Bright and very easy to read distances. Batteries last 4 or 5 rounds and it is extremely easy to edit hazards / distances. I got the V-500 this year thinking it would be equally as bright, larger screen size, and would be easy to determine lay-up distances by touching screen and sliding finger to whatever lay-up distance you want to find. Unfortunately, despite the fact that promotional videos show this "touchpoint" technique, you cannot slide your finger to find a particular layup distance. Instead you have to repeatedly touch spots on the screen until you get close enough to your desired layup distance to read distance to that point. UNACCEPTABLE! I complained to Sonocaddie customer service and was told thay would change the video so that it would not mislead customers (too late for me though). The screen also is not nearly as bright as the V-300.

FYI, I looked at a few units and I went with the Garmin G5. I can see everything on there pretty well and can REALLY see things in the zoom modes. I also like all the features of this unit now that almost all of the courses I play have the tree coverage update (and all courses I play are mapped). It's bulkier than I want but I play with a Clickgear pushcart and it goes right into the holding bay nicely. I went with the G5 versus the G3 as I want the stats tracking, I know, I know, boys and their toys.

I almost went with the Sonocaddie V300 but the reviews discussing some fairly large yardage discrepancies spooked me. I am a 2 handicap and I can't afford to be "in the ballpark" with my yardages, I need accuracy. Even so, I still almost pulled the trigger since I have also have a Pinseeker 1500 but....

I was set to buy an OnPar but when I found out that the battery is non-replaceable I realized you have a finite number of years that you can use this before it self-destructs.

Skycaddie was never really a consideration because I'm generally a tightwad and it would bug me too much to pay $50 per year for the ongoing privilege.

Thanks for the input here from others.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
