does anyone have any ideas on how to remove the lettering from the side of the older ping hoofer bags?

i was thinking paint stripper. but i dont want to mess up the bag.

thanks,

If you're talking about removing the rubbery painted on lettering you're not going to need to worry about messing up the bag because it will likely look messy under the letters no matter how you try to take them off.

Good luck though!

I'd start with a solvent first like lacquer thinner or acetone. Test as small and unnoticeable area as possible, because it is probable that anything that affects the paint will affect the fabric also, but it is worth a try. Then move to the paint stripper.

Another way I cover up obnoxious brand lettering is to buy some model paint from a hobby store that matches the bag color and hand paint over the lettering with a small brush. I did that with my black Cameron putter cover and like it much better. I hate being a walking advertisement that isn't getting paid for it.

Acetone and or paint stripper will melt the nylon. Best bet is to paint over the name with something that will not eat the nylon or a patch of some kind. Or call a local silk screening, t-shirt shop and see what they would recommend.

  • 6 years later...

I prefer pre-hoofer, single-strap karsten bags -- without the "ping" lettering, so I have de-lettered various bags (four in toto).

on an older bag I just used water and a rough sponge, and the lettering peeled off quite easily.

on the newer canvas / nylon bags it's a bit more complicated, but the basic premise is that heat will make the paint easier to scrape off.

at first I tried using an iron which worked ok, but there is a high risk of burning the bag.

the best solution by far was a blow dryer.

after trial and error, the method that worked best for me was to keep the blow dryer on at high and pointing towards the lettering. meanwhile with a butter knife begin scraping the letters (this is easiest when the lettered area is kept as taut as possible).

it will take a while depending on how much of a perfectionist you are, but in the end you will have a fairly blank bag.

just fyi, I decorate my bags with patches of various sorts e.g. flowers, hearts, etc., and with these added graphics one will hardly notice any small white specs or discoloration that remains from the de-lettering process.

anywho, I hope this helps all the future bag customizers out there :-)

I haven't done this but my suggestion was going to be similar. I was going to suggest using a Heat Gun. My dad uses this thing all the time for decals, badges, rubber, etc. (basically anything sticky) on his race car. I would think it would work well on that rubbery paint/decal/etc that is on the Ping bags. Just be careful that it doesn't damage the nylon. I think you can pick one up for under $30 at home depot/lowes.
