How To Make A Stimpmeter

Here is the guide:

To build your own stimpmeter

Go to your home center and get a 4 foot section of moulding called "cove moulding" ( $4.00). This moulding is flat on the back with a perfect golfball size groove in the center. Cut a length to 36". The groove for the ball should be 6" from the top. With a coping saw, carefully notch a 1/8" wide groove into the wood at 6". Place a ball in this groove and test to see if it releases when you raise the top side. The correct release point is 20 degrees. You will have to experiment with the notch until you feel you are getting it to release at this angle.

You could probably get the cove moulding from Home Depot or some other store.

Doesn't the ball release from a regulation Stimpmeter at 35 degrees (when performing an accurate reading)?


What about this device differentiates it from a regulation Stimp in allowing the user to get an accurate reading at a 20 degree release? Is there a formula associates with the difference?

I believe a regulation Stimpmeter is raised above the ground at a 20 degree angle, 35 degrees would make the ball jump off the ground as soon as it is released from the Stimpmeter, causing inaccurate readings. The only difference between your own Stimpmeter and a USGA Stimpmeter is that the USGA Stimpmeter is milled metal and your own Stimpmeter is smooth wood. But there would only be a difference of .25 of a Stimp speed readings between the 2.

I assumed you have made one yourself?! Please post pics! A member where I worked showed me how they test the speed of greens. Being just my 5th year in golf, it was interesting to know it is a very simple process.

I assume you are being serious on the .25 difference, how did you determine that, the kinetic friction coefficient difference on steel vs metal?

The other side of the coin is that unless you are a PGA Professional or GCSSA golf course superintendent you can't buy a Stimpmeter from the USGA.

What do you mean there would only be a difference of .25 of a Stimp speed readings between the 2 (USGA and Homemade). Is that .25 inches or 25% effect on accuracy?
