UST FF Putter Shaft Question

I have just had a UST putter shaft installed in my Tracy II. I notice that when you hold the head and grip and turn in opposite directions, there is a tiny "ping" noise. Anyone else have this problem? Is it serious? I spoke with a Yes rep and he said that he had one of the first FF putter shafts in this area and his did the same thing, nothing to worry about. I was playing with it yesterday and also noticed that if you really try to turn it (I was fooling around with the grip) the eniter graphite portion will rotate 360*. I've now put a sharpie line where the graphite and steel meet to make sure everything stays straight. Anyone else have any of these problems?

no one has any info? does this happen to your FF shaft?

I would talk to UST.. My guess the epoxy bond or whatever they use to hold the parts together is broken. My shaft does not do this. I think you need a new one..

Not sure about the rotation of the graphite section. However, do you know what kind of epoxy was used to install the shaft?

 

Often times the tour van fast curing epoxy cures with air bubbles present. When you torque the shaft, the "ping" noise is the air escaping as the epoxy compresses the air pockets.

 

I would reshaft with standard 24 hour curing epoxy to be sure.

I have many of the FF shafts in various putters and have never had this happen on any of them. Wierd.

I've noticed it....I just don't do it.

 

 

If you grab the head and grip and turn it in opposite directions, the graphite section at the joint between where the steel starts will turn.

I think I'm with Reid on this one. I don't know how much torque is required to get the shaft/graphite to separate and twist, but I'm thinking it's a touch more than the shaft is subjected to with the "average" 200-foot-putt-for-par. ;) Maybe give the Nike Unitized putter a shot later on for complete feeling of solidarity.

(I would contact UST, see if there is an epoxy problem, or if you have any recourse. Nothing worse than standing over your 200 foot par putt and not have complete confidence in your flatstick.)
