I have A CAmeron Studio Stainless Newport 2, as well as it's "beached" twin, a Studio Stainless Newport BEACH. Here are my thoughts on the slot, and an explanation from Scotty:

Explanation of the "Beach" sound slot:

http://www.scottycameron.com/articles/details.asp?id=24

Newport Beach - the "Beaches" have a sound slot in the putter that's supposed to help the feel, and also alter the sound characteristics of striking the ball. The sound and feel of a Beach model is very unique - I've found that practicing with a Beach helps me groove my stroke, with the feedback you get at impact. The Beach models don't have sightlines, but the Cameron Restoration shop can add one. The Beaches use the standard Newport Head, with a thicker topline visible at address.

As far as the Beach Slot - I agree with this post below. For that reason - I tend to practice with my Studio Stainless Newport Beach, but my gamer is a Studio Stainless Newport 2:

Posted by "Kuch" on Cameroncollector.com: "My experience has been that I sometimes have speed control issues with the beaches. Not because there is any real spring effect but the sound makes a difference and can trick you into feeling like the ball comes off the face "hot" or "dead" sometimes. The sound is a higher pitched, crisp sound on dead center hits and gets softer or more dead sounding on mishits. I find that the reason why I switch to the beach sometimes is to help me make sure I am hitting the sweet spot....the sound feedback let's me know this. I consider it sort of a training aid."

Here is my take on the Beach!

I have always disliked the beach model. Here is why.

I have a Ping anser with a SOUND SLOT or floating face... whatever you want to call it... My slighter is also a floating face as well. These two putters have the slit cut through the whole sole of the putter into just behind the cavity. So you can see all the way through. This alters the sound of the putter... and it is said to be connected to the feel of the putter. Resulting in a click or a more firm feeling putter.

The newport beach model from Scotty Cameron always baffled me because people always refer to it as a sound slot... in which it actually isn't... I know scotty's tour putters have real floating faces.

I hope someone can enlighten me on why Scotty only put half a floating face. Personally (note that word "personally") I don't feel that much of a difference between a newport and a newport beach mainly for that fact that it isn't a real floating face.... so does Scotty's Beach really do anything?

thanks guys...

M.

Research has been done that suggests most of what we think we feel when hitting a golf ball is actually what we HEAR. With that being said, the beach models sound different so, they feel different. I don't believe that the average person can tell the difference in the feel of one putter of the same type to the other but almost all can tell the difference in sound. If you would like to do an experiment, go to the practice green with your ipod and two different putters. You will probably not be able to tell much of a difference in feel with the earphones on.

I have a Cameron SS Newport that Tom Slighter cut a slot all the way through for me, the putter has a much better "feel" with this slot than with out it.

I also have a Cameron SS Newport Beach, while a bit heavier, does not feel anywhere near as good as the aforementioned putter. I have already sent this one to Tom for a sightline and it will be going back in th very near fututre to have the slot cut ALL THE WAY THROUGH as well. However, I don't believe that the "cut line" is in the same spot for an all the way thru cut. I may end up having a double cut on ths one...hmmmm...

The puter that feels BETTER BY FAR than both of these is my Cameron David Duval putter. Really solid and the cut goes all the way through the face. I just don't like to use it as my gamer all that much, even though I should, heck, for the money I paid for it!
