Young and strong. Low Clubhead speed(Help!)

Recommended Posts

hey. I've been playing about 2 years ago now, live in new jersey ,I'm 19 play twice a week in season twice a month in the off. i'm 6,1 201 lbs i workout 4 times a week(nothing crazy) play to about a 10-12 handicap from the white tee's(lot of info I know!) why is it a struggle to get a 95 mph clubhead speed? took a few lesson's and my swing has improved the last month or so. but no gain in distance, Why?

sounds like you may have the club too much in the palm of your hands....try getting the club more in your finger tips...this will feel opposite of what you may think of how to generate club head speed...and last the hardest part to learn ...imho.... is to grip the club with hand pressure with relaxed and supple forearms....good luck this should help free your wrists up like emc said...

Because clubhead speed doesn't come from strength. Period

It's like teaching someone to drive fast. You either have it or you don't,

and a lot of it is based on technique. It could also be that your not very

flexible so stretching would help add a few MPH.

Michael, I am a Strength and Conditioning Coach and I agree with Justin that clubhead speed does not come completely from strength. It has to do with the effeciency of your kinetic link. The concept involves "speed/momentum transfer from the large body segments (legs and hips) to the smaller body segments (shoulders, hands to clubhead)."

If you are in good shape and play golf frequently, you should look to your technique if you can't get past 95 mph. Before you take the advice from any of us though, be sure that you know conceptually what is supposed to happen in the golf swing.

For example, hammering through the shot with your wrists is probably just going to cause you to flip at the ball and hack it all over the place if you don't really know what that means. I think a better way to understand this is to take a swing in slow motion, get to the top, start down, and keep the end of the grip moving forward through the entire shot, you won't be thinking of releasing the club because you are focused on moving the grip end towards your target, but believe me, this is going to be the most efficient way to release the club naturally. The grip is going to pass the ball before your club does and you have just created a ton of lag, which of course is a big swing speed factor. This is a stab in the dark though, maybe you already do this, but a good guess on your swing anyway. If this doesn't help then I wish you the best of luck with the other parts of your swing.

There are only two things that affect distance...Centerdness of Contact and Clubhead Speed...

First and foremost, check where you are striking the ball on the face...

Secondly, and assuming you are striking center, in order to maximize clubhead speed, you must learn how to 'coil' or 'torque' your body effectively...Without effective 'coiling' you will never maximize your potential clubhead speed...

  • 1 month later...

Have you ever seen your swing on videotape? I'm 19, and just a few months ago I couldn't get my 7 iron to go 140 yards. So I started looking at videos of my swing and the biggest problem was that I was unhinging my wrists at the top of my swing. I've read that at the point of the downswing when your left arm is parallel to the ground, the average pro has an angle between the club and left forearm of greater than 90 degrees. I'd be surprised if this was not at least part of your problem.

i can't see him not holding his wrist hinge if he's playing to an 11 handicap...

the people that unhinge too early are hitting balls 50 yards to the right, cause they are coming over the top, and there's no way they are playing to an 11HC...

i'd like to see the swing as well... it's hard to diagnose without a video...

I started pretty much maximum maximum 98 mph this year and now i am 112-125 mph area.

2 things

No.1 you are still casting or flipping

No.2 you are only using your body , you need to use your arms correctly to hit far. I know its against most of the modern gurus . but the arms with the correct geometry provides a huge power source. Think HOW FAST CAN A BODY TURN to whip the cane? HOW FAST CAN HANDS WRIST ARMS WHIP A CANE. Try it and think .

If your coach tell you the body drives the swing. You will remain below 105 mph most of the time

If your coach tells you your arms and hand drive the swing. well you can get 110+ easily. 280 yards is easy. with occasional 300+ yards.

And actually you can use BOTH powered swing

So .. Body powered , core powered swing are really not a Powerful or high swingspeed method.

Both hand controlled or body controlled CAN be accurate.

I"m short, 5'9" at 160 pounds, but I can get the club going about 115mph when I want to, and for me speed is a mentality. I forget who it was but a short and skinny long hitter once said that he tried to get everything perfect in his back swing and then didn't give a damn on the way down. The only technique I use other than just trying to keep loose arms and getting in the state of mind to move as fast as I can is that I fire my hips really hard to start my downswing. This creates a good amount of torque for me and really pulls my arms through.

CS. I think I created a little misunderstanding.

The incorrect use of legs or Pivot or core will definitely limit power. That is for sure.. BUT if you are talking about spining out the hip from the top, or having a limited hip motion, then it will be definitely creating a problem .

Hip must clear and turn through correctly for any kind of swing, or you will limit power, and you will hit a block or some sort. There is few ways to create correct condition to clear this hip at the correct rate and automatically turn. HIP can(or dont need to, which for my case and method of swinging is correct) be active but 90% of the golfer without proper coaching = too active = Push .

It doesn't mean its a hand controlled type of swing. your body doesn't move. It still will, with the correct sequence and will support and power the swing. The core still provide the power.

And it doesn't mean that it is a body controlled swing your Arms do not move , back , up and down so that you wil be on Plane.. And the arms still provide power and its participation is anyway required to stay on plane.

Therefore you need to effective use the core and arms and hands to create clubhead speed. And Our brain , sadly, can only effectively monitor any ONE of them throughout the swing, the other ONE is more trained reflex, and feel .

Don't get me wrong. The Hand and arms , can only be as good as the quality of the core pivot. doesnt mean you concentrate on one, the other is totally neglected.

Thats why everyone need a good coach. An effective golf swing is very hard to describe. You need a coach. Unless you are super gifted.

The fastest i seen with my own eyes is a 5"8' 135 mph max. 122+ average. 45 inch driver( my coach :p). Everybody can go 300+ yards with proper training as long not too physically challenge.
