Fairway "metal"
Does it bother everyone as much as me when the announcers on TV call a 3-wood a "3-metal"? I dont know anyone who actually uses the term in real life, except maybe Peter Kostis or Johnny Miller on TV. After all the word "wood" in this case is a generic term to describe a type of golf club, not the substance it was made of 20 to 500 years ago. If this were true in all cases a lot of people would not play irons they would play "steels", and some people would play "graphites".

Spread the word-a wood is a wood even if it is made of metal, steel, graphite, titanium, uranium, kryptonite, marshmellows or plastic!

Am I just being a weird here or does it bother anyone else? :)

I can't wait to get my hands on one of the new Nike marshmellow triangle drivers. February '08 can't come soon enough.

More irritating to me is hearing Miller call a par 5 a "5 par."

Well, the 1W is called the "Driver", so I suppose we could go back to calling the 3W the "Spoon", but that still leaves are problem for the 4W, 5W, etc.

I guess we could just make up our own names. If the 1W is the Driver, the 3W could be the Shotgun; the 5W could be bitch (was that just my youth/location, or did everyone call the position in between driver and shotgun "bitch "? Of course, this is when cars still had bench seats.) I guess the 7W could be B.o.B (Baby on Board).

It is always fun to pull those terms out every once in a while when someone asks what you hit. Just a little knockdown niblick.

JoeF Posted Today, 01:04 PM

Actually I was upset when they stopped calling them brassie, mashie, niblick, spoon, etc.

1-wood=Driver

2-wood=Brassie

3-wood=spoon

4-wood=cleek

5-wood=baffy

6-wood/7wood=jigger

The modern woods dont always correspond directly with the old names becasue there was no such thing as a matched set, clubs just had names, but I think (I am not an expert) that these names are pretty much in the ball park.

Is anyone out there more knowledgable on antique clubs?

For that matter, irons aren't made of iron. So why call them irons?

Exactly. And putters aren't made of putty.

So let's just stick with "Woods", "Irons", and "Putters".

(Golf)Man Law?

Man Law!

woods

irons

putters

and in this day and age you have to include hybrids.

If this became the Man/golf law it would totally alleviate my pet peeve.

Somebody let Johnny Miller know, is he a WRXer?

Annoys the hell out of me, but not a s much as when they say he is using some sort of hybrid utility rescue iron wood for this shot. Just call it a hybrid like the rest of the golf world and move on.

I couldn't agree more, do they think the average viewer is stupid and don't know what a hybrid is? Who is it that always says that? Is it Peter Kostis?
