Deschamps Classic Review

First of all, I want to apologize for taking so long to write this, but with school and golf, my time has been quite constrained.

Appearance:

 

The Classic's traditional and elegant, yet utilitarian, styling holds true to its name. With a very "normal" appearance from address, this putter will remind you somewhat of a "pocket-less" newport 2 center shafted style putter. The bronze color looks incredible, yet with the finishing on it, is not in the least bit distracting. I had Serge add a "T" alignment aid, as I have an issue in which the putter to looks square, even when slightly open. The sightline, in red, makes it quite easy to see in all playing conditions, which in New England is very important.

 

The more "trivial" appearance things like stamping; I could not be happier with. Serge stamped the putter for me on the sole and on the toe and heel exactly as I wanted. He is a great guy to work with. He has his own style and will not "rip-off" anyone elses stamping but he'll try to figure out a way to make you happy with his product.

 

Playability:

 

The putter has great but unusual feel. Having played a carbon steel J.A.T. for a long time the feel was very different, a little bit more "tingy"; however, with time it is a feeling you get quite used to. The putter, because it is made to your exact specs, sets up quite nicely at address. I have a very "casual" stance when putting with my arms, and it causes me to need very flat putters even at about 6ft tall. I cant ever really find a center shafted putter that is anywhere near flat enough (3-4º) to get it to rest properly. Not a problem with this putter. Serge made it to the exact lie that I requested and it sits perfectly.

 

I did, however, notice one problem with the design in the sole, at least for me. The sole shape is cambered, if you will, and thus has a tendency to be somewhat Futura-like, in that it tends to rock open. This problem was easily corrected by not getting sloppy with how you set it, and overall is not that big a deal.

 

I will say that at the time I tested this putter I had serious putting problems, and this putter was quite easy to putt with. It is almost "idiot-proof" in that it has such a high MOI that slightly missed putts still go generally in the right place.

 

Overall:

 

This is a great putter. There really isn't much question about that. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but overall you won't find much wrong with it. Serge is a great guy to work with and he certainly is a true craftsman.

I do have one question for you; how was the roll? I'm making all putters of this test session with 0* loft, hoping for an ultra-tight roll. I need to know if zero loft is the right direction to go.

You do know that the Good Adam would have mentioned how the putter rolled the ball, right? :( The Deschamps Classic is easily the best looking putter of the 3 he has produced so far--in my eyes at least. Very nice lines, and some great theories driving the form behind the function.

 

Now get back to work Serge, I know you've had some new ideas. My Job-like patience has some limits you know. :( Oh, and I hope all is well with you, etc., etc. :(

Yeah, I've been a little "slow" lately with the putter work. Shift work @ a machine shop has been wearing me down a bit. I'm going to have to schedule time in beforehand to ensure things are done in a timely manner.

 

littleprov1x's putter will be finished this weekend and that will be the 4th of 4 (Ryun and Stickman have theirs). Then I'll get my Word not allowed in gear with that mallet, registering as a business, headcovers, website,etc...

The ball rolled great. It rolled relatively smoothely, however, that is one thing I cannot comment too well on. My home courses greens are kind of terrible up here, so they are not the easiest to get a good roll on.

Serge does excellent work, and his attention to detail is incredible. While I was getting mine made, we exchanged a ton of e-mails ensuring that my putter was exactly what I wanted.
