Cleveland CG16 Tour

I'm currently using TM Burner 2.0 Steel and have been using it for over a year. When I bought the TM was shooting off 24 and now it's down to 16; and I'm starting to hit the ball too high with the TM and decided to go with the CG16 Tour after testing various irons (Cobra AMP, Wilson Staff Ci9, TM MC, Callaway Razr X Tour, Ping i20) over at my local shop. The CG16 Tour had the best feeling and I was hitting it well and more consistent than the other irons and decided right then and there to order a set; I had them custom fitted and they were on sale which was a bonus. After checking it up on various reviews and forums, I realize that the CG16 Tour is aim towards lower handicap players. Although I've been striking the ball better, more confident, and improving overall ever since I got the Burner 2.0, but I'm not exactly a low handicap player yet.

So was it a bad choice for me to go for CG16 Tour? Am I going to struggle with it once I'm on the golf course?

Would love to here from you guys about the club and how it feels.

Cheers

I wouldn't worry about the players iron category. If you play often with some practice you will be okay and probably see more improvement. I have only hit the regular version 7 iron and loved it. I thought about mixing the sets 3-7 regular and 8-pw with the tour cg16. If you would need some more forgiveness in the longer irons after playing with them for awhile, maybe cleveland's customer service would let you swap.

The CG16 Tours are some real nice irons. I tested them extensively at a demo day and almost bought some. They had stiff Nippon shafts which were very nice with a decent mid flight. Very forgiving and long too, IMO

The i20's just played better for me, so I got them instead but they were a close 2nd place, The 200 dollar instant rebate from Cleveland is a real nice incentive as well. Great irons for the money.

I actually was lucky enough to try out the entire i20 range (Driver-PW) for a round. It's a great set of clubs but with the irons I tend to lose some distance due to not being able to give it a full swing. Every time I try to full swing the result would be pretty bad, but I guess that's probably down to my often not-so-good ball striking. I always end up swinging it 75%-90% and the result would be pretty good. Plus, IMO Ping tends to overprice their clubs like Titleist in comparison to other brands. I can't wait for the CG16 Tour to arrive this week and give it a try, which I probably won't play with it until next week as I have a tournament this weekend and don't want to use an unfamiliar club just yet.

well after replying to your post, I pulled the trigger on the cg16 tours yesterday. Assuming you will get your set before me, would like to hear any feedback when you get your and have the chance to hit them. thanks

Well, I went to the range yesterday and had a go with it and struggled with it a little bit; I was worried cause I had to play today. I don't know what's going on at the range but when I went to play earlier this morning, it was great. Unlike the TM Burner 2.0 it is very soft, the ball flight is good, more workable, you definitely notice it if you mis-hit but it was more forgiving than I expected it to be.

The only problem that I had was the distance. On my Burner 2.0, I can hit 165-170 with a 7 with ease but with this one either I have to really put more effort on it or I have to club up. But, then I realize it's probably down to the Burner having strong lofts. I'll actually be playing again tomorrow, cause I felt I wanted to hit some more with this club and I'm basically in love with it especially on how soft and smooth the club is. Like Bottlenosedolphin said it is the perfect combination of forgiveness and aggressiveness.

I'll let you know again after my round tomorrow on how it feels. Let me know if you had a chance to hit yours.

The CG16 Tour 6-iron is only 1 degree stronger than the Burner 7-iron. (30 & 31 degrees respectively)

The other way to look at it...the CG16 7-iron is 3 degrees weaker than the Burner. (Burner 31 degrees, CG16 is 34 degrees)

Basically a full club.

It's not you...it's them. :)

Well, I played another round today with the CG16 and I come to the conclusion that it is one of the best irons I have ever used. It shoots straight, good trajectory, plenty of spin, plenty of forgiveness being a supposed player's irons, workable, smooth and soft. I actually shot one of my best round of +5 today and it's only the second time I'm playing with it.

I use True Temper Dynamic Gold R300 which I think is the standard shaft. It was either that or Royal Precision Rifle 5.5. The Rifle was slightly heavier and its swing weight was heavier as well, I figured its alright if I'm fit but it might be a problem once I get tired cause I always walk the course plus I had to wait an extra week for it so I went for the standard shaft.
