Will any laser rangefinder work?

Just like the title says: will any laser rangefinder work? I types in on eBay laser rangefinders and the cheaper ones were hunting ones. Will these work for golfing or is their a reason why the cheapest golf one is 250?

Not usually. Most hunting lasers are designed to ignore distances to small things in the forground such as branches and twigs to get a lock on the bigger target in the background. Golf lasers are just the opposite, they are looking for the closest item regardless of size. Now there are some more expensive hunting lasers that can do both and allow the select the target priority mode.

I wouldnt recommend a hunting one. while the "might" work, a golf specific one is much more convienent. Also, the technology on golf finders is more relevant and makes live easier (pinseeker anybody?). Check the BST section here, Im sure you can find a good quality used one for a great price.

+1 to Stuart and Jay's replies. I have a Bushnell hunting rangefinder, and it is hit or miss whether it picks up the flag or not.

You realize that's not a laser? Looks like the kind that get's the distance based on how big the flag stick is in the view.

No so - Depends on the model.

For 6 years (maybe more) I have used a Nikon Monarch 800 for both hunting and golf. This rangefinder is camo and designed specifically for hunting, but, one can change the target mode to priority for near objects. This mode is labeled in the veiwfinder as "G" for golf.

I can get the flag everytime from 200 in with one click.
