how good do you have to be

Recommended Posts

to play for a D1 school
as in no (sports) scholarship, no recruiting. Just getting into the college on maybe an academic scholarship or just getting in. I know that some schools are better than others but if you contact coaches and end up getting accepted to the school without a sport commitment, how good do u have to be to play on the team. I don't mean top players but just on the team? Maybe im just tryin to ask how good you have to be to be a walkon. looking at a few colleges that are attractive to me, i can see that i could be scoring better than a few of the players on the team at least and was wondering if that really reflects how good a chance you have in getting on the team.

thanks in advance,
matt

I've been doing some reasearch....maybe this will give you guys and idea

I had six different players shoot 67 or lower in college tournaments last year on golf courses tougher than most juniors have ever seen, yet I am amazed that I still receive letters from kids who don’t even play #1 on their high school team. Players won’t even make my line-up with a zero handicap. Kids would be better off writing to coaches and schools where they have a chance to play so they can find out how good they can become. They won’t get any better if they are not getting any tournament experience.

Yeah, i was shocked aswell. I've got about an 11 handicap as a sophomore in high school, and my hopes of going to a D1 school seem a little far-fetched. In my opinion, you have to be a prodigy/ country club kid in order to play D1 (No offence to anyone). I'm looking into some great D2 schools, which wants about a 0-5 handicap on their squad. I feel that i can reach that goal, and along with my good grades and involvement in school....i could score some big time scolarships going D2. Thats the road I'm planning to take

just a little side note, for any of you interesting in playin D3 golf, they do not offer athletic scholarships.

Some teams aren't quite as competitive as others. I live in the Buffalo, NY area and there are three area schools with teams that aren't so hot. Canisius College, Niagara University and St. Bonaventure University are all local and their golf teams aren't exactly upper echelon. Check out their websites and stats and that should probably give you a real good idea of where you have to be to get onto a lesser team.

I float between single and double digits as far as handicap goes and I play Division III. It's enjoyable and competitive. You get some teams with only a couple kids that can break 100 and some teams with only a couple kids over par. It's interesting to say the least.

I know a guy one of those teams. He played with me on the high school team. He was the 5th guy on our high school team.

Also one of my good friends who is about a 5 handicap got 3 offers from US Div III schools in the last year of high school, he chose the PGM program as did I.

Obviously programs vary in competitiveness depending on the size of the school , etc.
