Inside Takeaway or Wrist Set issue?

Monday

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I still seem to be having trouble taking the club too far to the inside, despite feeling that I'm keeping the clubhead facing the ball for quite some time at the start of the backswing. I'm wondering if this is an issue with properly setting my wrists, because they don't seem to ever fully set. I'm not actually sure what a proper wrist set feels like or when it should begin. Other possible issues: Still not enough spine tilt away from target, left hip not bumped enough towards target, right knee over-straightening. Does everyone agree with those? Anything else anyone see?

You are in fact taking the club inside and you also have a dead shut clubface throughout your swing. At the top of the backswing, the clubface needs to be parallel to your left forearm. If the clubface is open, the toe of the club will be pointing down. If it is closed, the clubface is pointing to the sky. Get it parallel and that should help square it up. I guess I don't know why you want the club inside, but you are definitely doing it, and a little too far if you ask me. During your backswing, when the shaft is parallel to the ground, your clubhead should be covering your hands -(if that makes sense). If you pause your driver swing video when the shaft is parallel to the ground, it is too far inside.

I don't want it inside, that's why I'm asking what feel I should be using or what I should be doing to not take it so inside... What do I need to do to open the clubface? Is it a grip strength issue or something else?

Oh my bad. I read that wrong. For your clubface, you say that you are trying to keep the clubface facing the ball as long as possible. That right there causes a shut clubface. You don't want to roll your wrists open by any means to correct it, but what you are doing now is too shut. When the shaft is parallel to the ground, try getting the toe of the club pointing straight up to the sky. As for taking it too far inside, you just need to get a shoe box or a block of wood or something like that and put it right behind the ball on the range. When you take your backswing, just try to push it straight back and continue your swing. That should get you on a better plane.

your swing looks very similar to mine.. we both have very "long/wide" swings where the club doesnt get set... at 9 o clock our club is still facing away from the target instead of wirsts set towards the sky... or at least somewht set. as in montes video when he holds the club with one hand at 9 o clock.. i always tried not to flip so i thought setting this way and then releasing from that set would be a flip.. im working on trying to gain more set right now as well.. you deffinatley take the club inside which needs to be adressed but i believe a bit more wrist set is needed for both or our swings.. i dont believe forcing or making a concious effort is the correct way.. hopefully once we get the plane of the swing correct the weight of the club will naturally add more set.. maybe someone can help... these are just my observations and what i feel..

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
