I havent seen this movie yet. Another good one is The Legand of Bagger Vance. I wish they would make more golf movies instead of all of these cheap action movie.

it's a movie, not a documentary..most people wont know that about the car crash (i didn't) and will still be entertained.

 

just like braveheart and apocolypto...completely wrong about the history but bloody great movies.

I saw it, I thought it was a good movie, it captured the important parts of the story and was very entertaining.

 

However, I do agree that Mark Frost's book was much better, he has an uncanny knack of not only telling a great story but integrating period history as well into his books. Grand Slam is also a very worthwhile read.

Now that you say that, I think you are right. Either way, they showed the greatest player of the era shaking like a nervous kid w/o explaination. It is a pretty big deal to show that it was something he was battling the entire time. I just thought the movie moved too slowly. BTW, if someone wants the book, you can paypal me $8 and it will be on your doorstep!

Some of the best movies come out of true stories. That's what makes The Greatest Game Ever Played so good. It was a bit too Walt Disney-ish for my taste, but still a good view. It needed to be a bit rougher around the edges.

 

 

 

That being said, Caddyshack still gets my vote (so far). It doesn't matter how many times I watch it, I still p*ss myself laughing every time. :drinks:

I think Bagger Vance is a little overrated with Will Smith in it (sorry just my opinion).

i just watched the Greatest Game and loved it, great movie. but i cant figure out why he always sees those 4 men in black when hes getting ready to hit a shot. I know they put a course on his house but why does he see them and why do they show him visualizing just the hole and the fairway.

 

and did you know that the actual 1913 US Open wasnt that close in the playoff? He actually won by 5 strokes or something like that. But they had to make it a good movie right haha.

Has anyone seen a Gentleman's Game? I feel that this and TinCup are the cream of the crop when it comes to golf movies.

For me the serious golf movies just have not worked, the swings the seriousness of how hard hitting a ball is, whats at stake is just missing.

 

A documentary filmed on books by Fienstein "A Good Walk Spoiled" or the "The Majors" would get my attention.

 

Funny Golf Movies work, Tin Cup, Caddyshack, and even Happy Gilmore all make me chuckle and Renee Russo form Tin Cup is just a beautiful women.

I interpreted the 4 men as Vardon's internal demon constantly reminding him that he wasn't one of the "upper crust" and no matter how well he played, he couldn't become one. Remember when he thought he was going to be invited to join the one club in England, but instead they asked him to become their pro and he was crushed.

 

Anyway, I thought it was a great, uplifting move, even if historically a little inaccurate.

Can't say that I have actually seen a "great" golf movie. I've seen all the ones mentioned above and have to give the nod to Caddyshack as best of the bunch, with Happy Gilmore running second.

My pick goes to Happy Gilmore... The movie actually inspired me to pick up golf 2 years ago after quiting hockey. I try to end every round with a Happy Gilmore drive on 18. Got 'em going pretty straight now, but they really don't go any further than just standing still :rolleyes:

 

Enjoyed Greatest Game Ever Played, but didn't like Bagger Vance - even though I loved the book.

Dead Solid Perfect for me. A classic! I have the book too. It's written by Dan Jenkins who does a commentary in Golf Digest nearly every month. It's supposedly based on actual events that took place on the Tour in the 80's; centered around a fictional character played by Cousin Eddie. I love it.
