Too Much Bounce?

My Sandwedge on the Fairways

I have a Callaway Forged+ 56º Loft and 14º Bounce. When I tried the different wedges out, this seemed to be a good combination for me, but now I'm thinking it might be too much bounce. When I am on a tight lie I can't seem to get the wedge under the ball. When I purchased mine, I also tried the 12º bounce, but it seemed to dig into the ground too much. Is it that I just suck with the wedges or could this be a legitimate issue?

I was planning on getting a Callaway Forged+ 60º lob wedge with 10º or 12º Bounce, or even a Titleist Vokey 200 Oil Can (ya, I know, not a Callaway Product, what am I thinking, lol) 8º as my local shop has a 60.08 in stock. I think this might help, but I don't know how good that would be 40 yards out.

Any wedge assistance would be appreciated.

well let me tell you a little story........ :clapping:

 

I had this same question about my SW, and asked my pro why I'm struggling with my wedges off the fairway, and that I was considering a low-bounce SW. ...............He took a 1x4" wood plank (that separates the hitting stalls at the driving range), and carefully set a ball on top of the wood plank.

 

Then he asked "Is this a tight enough lie for you?" :cheesy: Dumbounded, I said "duh....Yeah, thats' the tightest you can get"

 

After that - my teaching pro took my SW in his hands, and promptly blasted a VERY high, straight, elegant shot right to the first flagstick on the driving range. Then he says: "It's not the BOUNCE". :D

 

I guess my moral is...........To me - 14* is too much bounce, but this aint' the reason for your ills. Focus on hitting off your LEFT side, with a descending blow to the ball. Doing the "John Daly" drill (hitting balls with only your left hand), or hitting balls out of a divot will help your downward ballstriking.

It certainly could be the bounce contributing to the problems. A lot of people have multiple sets of wedges depending on turf conditions. Here in the northwest things are usually pretty wet so a lot of bounce is helpful. That said, i'm considering getting a backup set of wedges with a bit lower bounce for when things firm up or I travel to places that have less moisture where less bounce would be helpful.

 

While you can improve it with your swing, the bounce could be a contributor to the problems.
