Scotty TeI3 screws... Help!

Well, I got 3 of the four out no problem but the fourth one (last to take out... of course) got stripped on me. Ended up having to drill it out.

 

Can any kind soul out there spare a couple so I can get my project wrapped up? Please PM me and we can work something out so I can at least reimburse postage or whatnot.

If not I can just order a box of 50 black oxide or 100 stainless from McMaster-Carr based on the specs in this awesome thread:

Find a True Value or Ace, or any hardware store that carries Hillman brand nuts, bolts, screws, etc.

I did a DIY resto on a TeI3 a couple summers ago and found the exact replacement screws there, hex cap an all. I'd give you the size if I remembered it. They had an entire box of very small screws. Only place I was able to find them. No luck at Home Depot or Lowe's.

And the 'screwback' idea isn't a bad one either. Add a screw to all 20 some dots, fill them all with caulk/elastomer and that's a nice, hidden way to add some weight to the head if desired.

I think these were filled with white bathroom caulk. Nothing special around the insert. Tad

IIRC the patent listed a GE white kitchen & bathroom caulk or something like that. You're right Tad, nothing special.

Thanks guys - I don't have either of those stores in close proximity so I'm just going to get a box of 100 ss from M-C.

I will see how the screws look once they're all in place; I may choose to leave them exposed on the cavity. The putter face however will need to be caulked as this is a 2nd gen Tei.

Elastomeric Sealant is easier and the best option for the insert and dots. I used Geocel 945 for this. For the screws a fellow wrxer sent me some a few years ago and I still had to shorten them to make them fit better

Question for you guys. Could you just painful the dots instead of using a caulk or elastomer? I may mess around with mine this winter...

The elastomer is supposed to soften the feel, depends on how picky you are about feel.

Thread: 1-72
Length: (thread length not overall) 3/16"
Socket size: 1/16"

As for the elastomer, I know lots use bath caulk. I prefer elastomeric sealant(I use Dow Corning) or RTV. It's more like what's used, as most bath caulks set up kind of like gum mixed with sand, has a texture and is firm, if you're gonna use bath caulk, make sure that you get one that is silicone based as it tends to set up a little softer like the original and it has some elasticity like the original.

Thanks RB - I already ordered a box of the stainless screws from McMaster-Carr this afternoon.

I did pick up some pure silicone bath caulk, after researching a lot of the threads here about opinions/consensus on what was the preferred material. It seems that the "best" stuff tends to come in massive quantities (relative to my needs) and is cost prohibitive for that matter.

Okay, a helpful hint on the screws. Dump them out where you can dig through them. Some will be a smudge longer than others. I have the tools to alter them and just shorten the longer ones when needed, but if you don't know how or don't have the tools, find the shortest ones you can in the box/bag.

You just wouldn't get too many threads into the insert. Maybe 2-3 at most. Long as you don't slam the putter or drop it, it'll be fine. They're brittle for their size though and they'll shear fairly easily (I sheared 2 today tightening them).

EDIT: Got the Screws three days later from McMaster, Confirmed that they fit. They might be a little longer than I remember? But in any case they fit perfectly and go below the surface of the holes on the face. Once I fill with elastomer I am sure they won't be seen

by trial and error approach 1/16” Allen key head is thus correctly
